Game Thread | Game #63 | Cavs @ Hawks | Feb. 24, 2023

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
First game this year I felt the Cavs were humiliated. This is game 63 so I guess that says something. At least they fought back to within 13 points after being down by 34. If Cedi makes a 3 they're down 10 with 9 minutes to go. But he missed badly and the Hawks easily regained control and quickly pushed the lead back to 20.

In the first game Young was 1-for-7 and Murray was 4-for-17. I said in the preview these guys would want to get some respect back. Well, they did. They combined for 59 points and 17 assists.

That 49-point second quarter was a bitch slap. The Hawks made their first 15 shots of the quarter. I've never seen a team make 15 consecutive field goals against anybody, much less one of the top defenses in the NBA.

The Cavs consistently got beat down the floor for easy layups, lost track of players under the rim, and got sucked into the paint allowing uncontested corner 3's. Young toyed with them. You could tell he was not going to be held to a single field goal this time - far from it. He finished with 34 points on 15 shots and was 14-for-15 on free throws.

The Cavs bench was outscored 29-9 in the first half. I really feel like we have four solid players and everybody else is a mix of good and bad. The Hawks rolled to an easy win without starting PF John Collins. It didn't matter.

The Cavaliers did not make their first jump shot until nearly three minutes into the second quarter. They started 0-for-7 on 3's and also missed all their 2-point jumpers. All their first quarter points were at the rim or on free throws. Incredibly bad outside shooting, just like against Denver the night before.

The Hawks scored 108 points in the first three quarters - beyond embarassing. They were 18-for-22 in the second quarter, which had to be the worst quarter the Cavs have played in years, if not ever.

The Hawks got Saddiq Bey from Detroit to give them more 3-point shooting and he was 5-for-8 on 3's and finished with 20 points in 28 minutes. Okongwu came off the bench for 13 points and 11 rebounds in 25 minutes, along with 2 steals and 3 blocks. Our bench is pretty much a joke. Cedi and Stevens played well (+9 and +8), but that was it. Neto did a solid job.

Hopefully this game will embarass the Cavs to the point where they come out with a lot more fire from now on. But right now they look kind of lost. The defensive breakdowns leading to uncontested dunks and wide open 3's were alarming. Just when this team got healthy they stumbled coming out of the break. This next game against Toronto at home will be huge. The Cavs are 0-3 against the Raptors and Toronto is on a roll.
First off excellent post. But if I remember right we hit 16 out 17 one quarter just forgot what team. Also I'd that embarrassing lost to the D-League warriors didn't light a fire under there asses nothing will. These fools will lose to Toronto on Sunday for sure.

You have to wonder if management wants Wade playing so JB says “it’s my team” so only plays him few minutes to shut management up and then plays “his guy

Very close. Good post. It's about ready to blow up.

Same thing over and over again.1)Okoro.Why would you trade for Bey,when you have 2-5 pts/game Okoro?!(right,Altman?).2) Useless bench in 90% of the games. They only show up when our starting five is outscoring opponents srarting five,in any other case ,we have not a single bench player to rely on.Hawks 4 bench guys just produced more points than Cavs 8(eight,Karl). 3) Coaching. Untill we really stuff our roster up with quality SF and pretty much replace all bench players with at least one-two whom can put up 15 pts each per night there’s no championship rings coming our way.

They played different than they had the whole season. We didn’t react. This is where you start turning it on for the playoffs and it’s something we have to figure out sooner than later. It was one of the worst performances of the season. - Ricky Rubio

Just understanding a team who is fresh and newly motivated and being prepared to match that...We didn’t put up much resistance, especially in that first half. The game turned into a bunch of one-on-one battles that we lost. Not enough physicality, grit and determination. - JBB

I feel like we weren’t playing with the intensity that we should have. I feel like this was on us tonight. - Jarrett Allen

Another disappointing loss where the consensus seems to be that the young Cavs weren't prepared to be as intense and physical as the experienced opponent. How long are they going to talk about being a young team that has a lot to learn?

"They played different...we didn't react."

Maybe this game was a wakeup call. Time to put on the big boy pants.

Remember when most of us thought Wade should be the guy to start at the 3 for us? I still think that. But we have no backup bigs, so he pretty much has to play the 4 off the bench. Seems to be getting fewer open shots in this case, but not enough playing time to be sure of that.

If I read between the lines after losses, these guys are a bunch of low character pussies.

That may not be what they want it to sound like, but that’s how it comes off.

Soft team. They will need to break the top four up, shake the bench up significantly, and fire JBB within the next three years.

That might sound like a lot, but pretty much every team does it anyways. In this case, I think Allen is probably the guy that goes. The bench can’t shoot, so it’s gotta be shaken up. JBB won’t be the guy. Player’s coaches rarely are in the end.

Raptors, Celtics twice and Heat twice in the next couple weeks. 5 big L’s right there. Looks like a stumble down the stretch just like last year and instead of losing 2 play in games they will likely lose 4 straight first round games.

But they are young, so don’t worry (huge rye roll)

Why won’t your boy shoot the ball?
I completely sympathize with him not shooting, cause if he misses one shot JB decides to bench rest of the game
