Chicago Bulls

There are 17 days remaining before the NBA’s trade deadline.

That’s how much time Bulls general manager John Paxson has to decide whether to make a move now or let things ride into the summer, when the Bulls will have two first-round draft picks and roughly $15 million in cap room to play with.

The Bulls talked about a multi-team deal involving Denver, different than the one mentioned in the New York Post on Sunday involving Orlando’s Steve Francis going to the Nuggets. It’s also possible the Bulls were offered Denver power forward Kenyon Martin, a tough take with $70.8 million and five years left on his contract.

Another objective for Paxson is to try and solve the mystery of Drew Gooden. The Bulls and Cleveland Cavaliers have had discussions about the 6-foot-10 power forward, according to a league source.

Gooden will be a restricted free agent this summer, so it’s likely the Bulls would have to give up something in return whether they trade for him now or try to sign him during the off-season. The most logical fit in a trade would be Chris Duhon, since the Cavaliers are hurting for a true point guard.

There are times when Gooden appears to be a very good player. He’s averaging 11.1 points and 8.8 rebounds this season, which is actually down from 14.4 and 9.2 last year. His minutes have dropped slightly with the addition of Donyell Marshall.

The issue with Gooden is he’s been traded twice in four NBA seasons and many observers don’t expect him to stay in Cleveland. Such a history always raises a red flag, since it’s natural to assume something must be wrong with the guy if three teams don’t want him.

But Gooden has an advocate on the Bulls in Kirk Hinrich, a former teammate at Kansas. Any negatives in Gooden’s game have gone unnoticed by the Bulls’ point guard.

“I know Drew real well,” Hinrich said. “He’s a good friend of mine. He doesn’t play his full game with the Cavs. He’s kind of just a garbage man, like a third or fourth option. I think he has the ability to do a lot more and produce more.”

Questions have been raised about Gooden’s basketball IQ. But someone who has watched him closely suggested the issue is not intelligence, but maybe a lack of focus.

After being chosen fourth in the 2002 draft by Memphis, Gooden was traded in February of his rookie season to Orlando, then traded again in the summer of 2004 to Cleveland.

“I think a lot of times when guys come in the league and were traded a couple times, they get a bad reputation,” Hinrich said. “How many teams has Jimmy Jackson played on? (Answer: 12) I think a lot of times it’s not anything negative. It’s positive because somebody else wants you and thinks you can help.

“When I played with Drew, he’s real competitive and wants to win. He’s a good kid.”

•Forward James Thomas practiced with the Bulls on Sunday in Salt Lake City and the team offered no word on whether he’ll be let go or signed to a second 10-day contract. His first 10-day deal expired Sunday.

I would love to get Heinrich - not possible with this deal though. Duhon is tough, but inconsistent - maybe Duhon and a big for Drew....Sweetney???

i am not all that thrilled with the idea of trading Gooden for Duhon and any big on the Bulls roster other then maybe Chandler. i know that won't happen but he is the only guy who plays a little D and rebounds.

if they could get Hinrich i do that in a heart beat.

It does work:

Chris Duhon

Chicago Trade Breakdown
Outgoing

Mike Sweetney
6-8 PF from Georgetown
9.8 ppg, 6.0 rpg, 1.0 apg in 21.5 minutes

Chris Duhon
6-1 PG from Duke

Drew Gooden

11.1 ppg, 8.8 rpg, 0.8 apg in 28.0 minutes
Change in team outlook: -8.0 ppg, -0.3 rpg, and -5.7 apg.

Successful Scenario
Due to Cleveland and Chicago being over the cap, the 25% trade rule is invoked. Cleveland and Chicago had to be no more than 125% plus $100,000 of the salary given out for the trade to be accepted, which did happen here. This trade satisfies the provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Sweetney is solid too - he has potential to become much better. Duhon is the defensive and offensive PG we crave...

If we got the second one I would crap my pants..

lol @ the second one. That would be nice though..

The first one...it's tough to say, esp trading a big inside your own conference. Sweetney had potential when he was with the Knicks and really hasn't done much. He isn't huge, he is only 6'8'' so he probably is what he is at this point.

But why is Tim Thomas not getting any tick in Chicago? He was always a pretty good player, he isn't being used at all. Is he injured? Whats up with that?

And Tyson Chandler just got a fat contract and has busted all over it...he can stay in Chicago.

This trade is one that I have thought about over and over and over.....It would be the 1st one mentioned and Sweetney does have some potential not as much as Drew but he is a nice player....But he is not really the defensive type we really want at the 4....so all in all I would Love to get Duhon and secure our #1 spot for the future and Sweetney comes very cheap and most likely Drew is walking or we are gonna have to over pay him in the summer so I guess I say yes

No way Bulls give up Deng.

Gooden for Duhon makes sense for both teams

I am not sure about Sweetney. He seems to be getting fatter by the year. I see potential lazyness from him in the future.

Chris Duhon would be a nice fit for the Cavaliers, but to tell you the truth, I would much rather keep Drew then to bring these two along.

Duhon is a nice fit... no way we get deng gordon hinreich or tyson ....we may possibly land Noccioni in a deal involving Pavs which is somethign I would def do .....but it looks like just duhon and sweets and possibly Malik Allen which I think I take because I dont think Drew is here next year anyways

If Nocioni was involved in some sort, I would push for the trade. He is a good defensive hustle player that we definatly need. He can also play both forward spots.

Bulls fan on other boards are calling for Gooden and pavs for duhon and sweetney and 2nd rounder....are they joking?!?!?!?! the only way pavs is gone is if we get Noccioni in the deal which is what I said to all of them and they quickly shuit up about pavs haha

I don't believe Pavs is tradable at this point, we have no other wing players because of injuries. Unless they want a Luke Jackson with a bum back and wrist.

I would do the first trade and obviosuly the 2nd hehe. I am really high on Chris Duhon, i think he is exactly what we need out of a point guard. This guy plays stellar defense, can stroke the three and is the leader we need out of that possition. Sure sweets is a fat guy, however i thought he looked rather good playing against us... Anyway, bringing in sweets I think we have enough firepower to get through the season as far as our bigs are concerned and we take care of a huge problem we have had for years at point guard.

We should get back to the original idea of the story and not made up trades. It would basically be Gooden for Duhon and a throw in for cap purposes.

I'd prefer to get more back from the Bulls. But, if the Cavs have decided that Gooden doesn't fit long term than this is a deal worth making. Cavs get a decent young PG who could be the answer there long term. Duhon isn't perfect but is a solid player and can improve.
