I've said before that this year's football team is the best I've ever seen, well they also may be the best in the classroom OSU has ever had as well:

Ohio State had 61 players with 3.0 GPA and the quarter TEAM GPA was 2.93.

Hey, they probably have the highest character of any team they've fielded too. That's pretty hard to measure, I know, but they did win the Humanitarian Heisman this year.

How can you not love what JT is doing with this program?

I'm waiting the barrage of haters..

The George
Mac
James23..

You could make a very strong statement for this years team.

If they win this last one, especially if it's not a close game, it would be an easy argument. Honestly, if that happens you can start comparing them to some of the greatest teams ever, regardless of school. They will have ran the table as #1, something that I believe has only been done one other time, they will have beaten three #2's, something no one else has done, and will have blown at 11 of their 13 opponants, including two of the #2's. I wonder where their average margin of victory stacks up historically? I know it's really high on the list.

Stumbled upon this:

Just how good were they, Johnny?...It’s been 33 years since Ohio State and Michigan last squared off for all the marbles and they were both undefeated. That was 1973 and the game ended in a tie, 10-10, of course. The best part of the whole memory? Michigan fans (in general) and Bo (in particular) going Def Con 7 ballistic when the B-10 voted to send Ohio State to the Rose Bowl after the tie. :chuckles: Where did Michigan go that year? They went home to sulk…

We have talked about the glittering stats of the current 2006 edition of the Buckeyes (a lot more glittering before The Game, at least for the defense) but the numbers for the 1973 team were downright staggering. Take a look: In their first nine games, the Buckeyes beat nine teams by an average of 36.4 points. Not to be outdone, the defense was yielding just 3.7 points per game.

The 73 team went on to beat USC in the Rose Bowl. Still, that team tied UM, this year's team won. If they win the last one and go 13-0...

BSU is a good mid major team, that OSU's second string would wipe the floor with. Your point?

I thought this was interesting commentary:

A thought seized me this week that we have thanked almost everyone that has had anything to do with this fabulous OSU football program. But there’s one glaring omission in our zeal and patent obsequiousness. That forgotten figure?

That would be Andy Geiger. Geiger was the force behind the Ohio Stadium reconstruction. His dedication to getting the stadium re-built and to gather all the other forces to approve it cannot be under-emphasized. Plus, the place is just dazzling – a palace for college football.

And Andy Geiger held out staunchly against those alumni that wanted Glen Mason as the next coach, sticking with his commitment to hire Tressel. All the other things that we are celebrating that involves Ohio State football would be far different without Coach T.

And then, he hired Thad Matta, despite more pressure from more alumni to bring in Bob Knight. Instead of a carnival act, we got a class act. And an inside track to vie for numerous national titles. Does there need to be any additional evidence of AG’s huge impact on the sports future of the university? Well, then, how about the building of the Schott? Plus the soccer stadium, the new track and new boat house, and on and on into the night. He built great facilities and had a great facility for vision, the vision of the future of OSU athletics.

When history is written, I think Andy Geiger could be viewed as the greatest AD ever at OSU. It’s sad, in retrospect. To remember the heartache and the grief he took over the Maurice Clarett debacle; none of it deserved. He took much of the fall during the dark days that were the investigation at the university. So, in the spirit of the holidays and in the remembrance that should go with that spirit, let’s raise our glasses to Andy Geiger – a great AD and a great visionary. And, thanks, Andy…

Oh, and this also (same link):

Like bananas, these guys come in bunches…Is the recruiting of certain positions cyclical? Here’s a bunch of thoughts to ponder…Last year, we had a fabulous haul of linebackers (Grant, Homan, Gibson, Moeller and Johnson). All potentially great. This year we have potentially great hauls at the defensive line (Devon Still, Solomon Thomas, Ben Martin, Josh Brent, Joseph Barksdale, and Antonio Jeremiah) as well as safety (Nate Oliver, Eugene Clifford, Devon Torrence could play there and Major Wright could come here). Both those groups might be the best in the country for their position.

Next year? Its offensive line possibilities with Mike Adams, Rowell, and Zebrie Sanders from Ohio and JB Shugarts, Kyle Long, and Mike Brewster from out of state. There’s more wealth at linebacker just in the state of Ohio with the Mooney guys (Beachum and Zordich) and Devoe Torrence just to name three.

So…if the lines are covered and the DB’s and LB’s are covered, what about those specialty positions? You know, the “skill positions”? Well, at tight end we have two monsters next year in Kyle Rudolph and Brandon Moore. Tailback? We got Chris Wells last year (the best in the nation). Fullback? Aram Olson might be the best in the nation? Quarterback? That was last year, too, with Antonio Henton. Really, there’s not much of a position that’s not got “best in the nation” written all over it.
