Just wondering if anyone has been to Honolulu, and if you have, do you have any suggestions on things to do there? I have a buddy who works for Delta Airlines and he got 3 of my friends tickets for $200 round trip and we couldn't pass it up. We are leaving next Tuesday after I finish my finals here at OSU. Any suggestions on fun stuff to do in the Waikiki Beach area?

Yeah, get on a plane and go to Maui. :chuckles:

Pearl Harbor is a must...a very moving experience.

Hiking up Diamond Head was kind of cool...some amazing views at the top of the extinct volcano. Don't wear flip flops.

I went snorkeling at Hamauna(sp?) the first time I was there. I heard they charge and they make you watch a video now to deter crowds. Might be worth it...might not. Ask around. Maybe with the economy it will be empty...maybe a local can suggest somewhere better.

Waikiki beach is beautiful but usually crowded. If you are looking for crowds then you'll want to hang there. We took a jeep around an found other beautiful beaches and waterfalls that weren't as packed. But I was with the wife and she was probably more into the sightseeing than you and your friends.

Some great restaraunts and bars in the Waikiki area too.

I have been, neet place, been years, Max has some good suggestions for sure. He never lets anyone down on this type of stuff thats for sure

Rent a car, drive up to the North Shore and watch the real surfers up there. You can find some nice out of the way restaurants up there also. While in Waikiki, go parasailing. About a mile off shore, 250 feet in the air, just gliding around - beautiful views of Waikiki Beach and Diamond Head. Probably around $50 a person for a 30 minute or so ride, but so worth it. Try to take in one of the traditional style luaus also - the Kalua Pork is some of the best pig you will ever eat. Taste the poi just to say you did it, but don't expect much. It tastes like purple paste. A tour of the Dole Pineapple Factory is also nice, then try the pineapple soft serve before you leave the facility. While you have the car rented, just drive around the entire island of Oahu (takes about 3 hours or so, depending on how many stops you make). If you like pics, stop at the blow hole around Hanauma Bay, and make sure you get to see Chinaman's Hat. As mentioned previously, take the Diamond Head hike - make sure you wear comfortable, closed shoes, take a couple bottles of water with you, and ensure you have your camera with you.

Oh, and if you have any sense of pride in your country, the Arizona Memorial is an absolute must.

One of my best friends lived there for 3 years. Big time surfer chick. She "went" to school there @ U of Hawaii. Anyways, she always told stories about Kailua and Lanikai Beach (both are in Kailua, near Honolulu). Tons of people, tons of parties.

Word of the wise: try not to make a wrong turn down a street you're not aware of. She told me Honolulu was extremely high in crime and the natives pretty much hate outsiders.

True to some extent. What they don't like are non-locals surfing when they don't know what they are doing. Becomes a dangerous situation for all involved. They want tourists to surf at Waikiki on the small waves. For the most part, the locals don't have a problem with haoles that are visiting, as long as they know their place.

If I was on the island, I might say something like "See You Next Tuesday."

Yup...My buddies and I got into a couple of scuffles there several years ago..

I won a couple non pro tournaments up at Mavericks back when I was surfing seriously, and actually got invited to surf North Shore.. I won one, and finished 3rd and 4th in the others...But yeah, if you're not in any type of tournament, I would not recommend riding their waves...

Surfing the North Shore is incredible though.. I can remember so vividly the first wave I got inside of had this whistling sound all the way though it... Hard to explain unless you surf, but it was surreal...

My family just went there this past summer.. of course I couldn't go since I just had started my new job. But the thing they said the best were Pearl Harbor and hiking diamond hill. And of course just enjoying the weather, water and everything else. But have fun man I'm sure it will be a blast.
