Iman Shumpert: Gone! Thank God!

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Its crazy how the knicks never valued shump like he should be valued, he has upside talent and he is only 24 years old with elite defense, he was such a steal along with jr is crazy what a good environment will do to a player.

I think this is due to Shumpert being a very odd player. He has the skills of a SF and the SG position. If he can get better he will be one of the best shoe in player for a contending team. So better be glad we got this guy as he and Smith on a winning team are hell for opposing teams.

Yeah, that is not yet known. He has a QO at 3.9 million, but he has to make it through restricted free agency for that to hold. Someone is going to offer him more than that and the Cavs are going to have to match if they want to keep him.

True, but the team has the exception to go over the cap and match the offer.

Yes, but the point is the Cavs don't have him locked into a cheap contract.

It's highly premature to speculate what another team might offer him this summer, and every year there are contracts given out that are a big surprise. That said, if Love, Smith, and Miller (player option) are back, I could see a team extending a fairly lucrative offer sheet (say, the full MLE) on the assumption the Cavs won't want to pay that much luxury tax.

Depending on how things play out, maybe the Cavs offer him that type of money anyway. Hard to predict. He's got the rest of the season and the playoffs to drive his next contract.

Shumpert at the full MLE seems like a pretty reasonable contract. I don't doubt that the Cavs would match that in a heartbeat. Five to six million for a young 3&D guard who knows his role and fits the team perfectly is a solid deal.

His dribbling is a little rusty, as well, but that should improve.

I think the problem is bigger than just rust. He just isn't a very good ball-handler, and never has been. Granted, he's now got rust on top of that, but it is still an underlying problem that I'm not sure can be improved significantly. I think it caps how good he can be as an SG, though I still think he is a good fit here.

Dear God...

NOT AGAIN:

CAAAAAABS!

Athletic wings who are low usage and somewhat limited offensively are valued very inconsistently. Al-Farouq Aminu, a somewhat similar player to Shumpert, got only the minimum from Dallas last summer. Again, it will depend on how Shump plays down the stretch and into the playoffs. If, for instance, he shows he can shoot 3s at 35%+ clip, and also shows he can be the primary perimeter defender on a good team, and he doesn't get hurt, then his value will certainly go up. But getting back to the original point, I don't know that I would say the full MLE for 3-4 years would exactly be cheap.

That was a great game from Shump, really helped settling the team down on defense and setting the tone. once he came in in the second half the defensive energy completely changed.
