On potential alone, Abner Abreu and Carlos Rivero should be ranked higher. Abreu had a terrible year in the minors but the kid is as raw as they come. His upside is, no joke, Alfonso Soriano. Rivero is a phenom as well, so much so that the Tribe protected him on the 40 man roster. You don't see that too often.

I think you're confusing the two.


Abreu was fantastic this season in the minors, but ended up injured and missed the rest of the season.

He certainly is talented, but he also swings at everything which leads to some really bad K/BB numbers. His raw power might be the best in the organization next to Weglarz, but he has a LONG way to go before he can be considered a highly rated prospect IMO.


Rivero was the one who had the horrible year, hitting .247/.317/.342/.659 with a miserably 16 percent line drive rate at AA Akron. His numbers were marred by a terrible first half:

April - .222
May - .211
June - .195

He got better as the season went along:

July - .269
August - .292
Sept. - .309


But really didn't show any power potential that people (myself included) saw prior to this season. He's not very rangy at short, but his arm certainly helps...as the dude has an absolute fucking cannon.


That said, he's going to start out at Akron again this season and repeating a level is not a very good thing if you're looking to be names a top prospect.


I still think Rivero has the highest ceiling of any infielder in the Indians system (Lonnie C included), but this is certainly a make or break year for him from a prospect perspective.

The only negative thing I can really say about you is that you don't look at the big picture. It sucks that the Indians have to trade away talent every other year, but it's the nature of the business. Just be thankful we have a brilliant General Manager who knows how to manage a small market team amidst the predators. I hate it, you hate it, we all hate it. But what can you do except root for the jerseys and not the players. That's what I do. Makes it much better.

Which is precisely why I like to follow minor league players. These guys will be in the system 5-10 years and you get to see them progress from the bottom to the top. The only teams that are happy with baseball are located in NY, Chicago, Boston, LA and Texas.

I get a little too optimistic with my evaluations of our minor league players but we are extremely stacked with talent. Despite the current state of our team, Shapiro has managed to put together one of the best farm systems in all of baseball. If some of our top guys pan out and stay healthy, it could easily be the best. I mean, Rivero and Abreu would be in the top 10 for some systems.

True, true. We definitely have a top farm system, but like I said before it seems like we have some guys at the top who are really, really promising and then a lot of C+ talent. But like I also said, odds would say some of those guys could turn out better than that. Still a shame about Adam Miller...

I think Rivero and De La Cruz are going to surprise this year. Rivero came back strong after a dismal 1st half. He looked great in the playoffs. I'd like to see more plate discipline.

De La Cruz should have been ranked higher. The kid has great stuff. I'm expecting a big rebound and back into the top ten for 2011.
