The Cleveland Indians hope to build on a rare strong performance from their pitching staff as they begin a two-game series with the Kansas City Royals.
The Indians, who look to win consecutive games for just the second time this season, got a great outing from C.C. Sabathia in Sunday's 2-1 win over Minnesota. The left-hander, who was activated from the disabled list on Saturday, worked 5 2-3 strong innings and left with the game tied 1-1.
The Indians have given up five runs or more in six of their previous eight games. However they will be facing a Kansas City squad that has scored two runs or less in five of their last six contests.
Kansas City lost its second straight home game Sunday, 6-1 to the Detroit Tigers.
The Royals lost their first three home games early last week and are 1-5 at Kauffman Stadium, where they have been outscored 39-13.
``We're struggling offensively right now and that's the big difference,'' said Royals manager Tony Pena after Sunday's loss.
Royals first baseman Mike Sweeney is even starting to struggle, going 0-for-4 to snap his 10-game hitting streak.
Cleveland may be without designated hitter Travis Hafner, who was hit by a pitch on his right elbow with the bases loaded in the eighth inning to force in the go-ahead run.
``It's a little swollen, but I'll ice it tonight and see how I feel tomorrow,'' said Hafner, who had surgery to remove bone spurs from the elbow Oct. 6.
``I usually wear my elbow pad against lefties, but for whatever reason I forgot to put it on. The first pitch almost hit me and I was thinking it probably would be a good idea to go back and get it. I just didn't.''
