Indians Sign Shelley Duncan
Posted by Tony at 12:01 AM

According to a report out of New York, the Cleveland Indians have signed free agent outfielder Shelley Duncan to a minor league contract with an invite to major league spring training camp.

Duncan, 30, is a powerful right-handed bat who is likely being brought in as a depth option at first base and a backup plan there if Matt LaPorta is not ready to start the season following offseason surgeries to his toe and hip. If LaPorta is not ready, then Duncan would likely form some sort of platoon at first base with Jordan Brown or even Andy Marte.

It is also possible that he could platoon in the outfield and be the fourth outfielder in lieu of the versatile Trevor Crowe since expected left field starter Michael Brantley already provides versatility with the ability to play all three outfield positions. A Duncan-Brantley platoon in left field would certainly not be out of the question.

More than likely though, Duncan is being brought in just as a depth option and to fill a need at Triple-A Columbus where he would likely be the starting first baseman to open the season (Jordan Brown would be in left field). First baseman Beau Mills is not expected to be moved up to Columbus to start the season, so there is a need to fill in at first base in Triple-A considering Brown and Stephen Head are now considered full time outfielders (though still play first base on occassion).

Didn't work out for the Yankees, but I guess you never know. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. I guess.

A 30-year old with a career .219 batting average and .701 OPS? I salivate at the thought of that Ruthian stick in our lineup.

rofl @ Ruthian

:chuckles:

Maybe we should call it "Duncanian" instead. Check out the family stat sheet.

Shelley Duncan - 63rd overall selection, career .219 BA, .701 OPS
Chris Duncan (brother) - 46th overall selection, career .257 BA, .801 OPS
Dave Duncan (father) - St. Louis pitching coach, career .214 BA, .636 OPS

Must make for a hell of a family reuinion whiffle ball game. :chuckles:

damn it the world series joke was already taken...

edit i thought of something...

maybe shelley can join Grady's Ladies.. you know what fuck all of you, its late, and thats the best i could do.

The only stats that matter when talking about Shelley Duncan:

30 HRs 99 RBIs 64 BBs .277/.370/.546

Those where his stats in AAA last year- which is where he is going to be playing for the Tribe. He doesn't really have a career split in the minors showing he hits lefties better, so I don't think he has much of a chance of wedging onto the Tribe's roster as a lefty matchup guy (which the Tribe could use). His job will be to provide some pop for the Clips, that is about it. Of course, seeing how Duncan's last team, the Scranton-Wilkes-Barre Yankees, played in the IL championship series, maybe printing Governors Cup tickets is in order?

I know this was already said in the article, but the reason why he was signed was to compete with Jordan Brown for pt at first base (seeing that Apostle LaPorta could be out for a decent bit). Based on Shapiro's track record, I would be shocked if Brown gets the nod over Fugly McGee

Wow. How soon do the series tickets go on sale? lol I think pitchers and catchers report in about a month and half or so. How sad is it the most news since the manager announcement is that we obtained a Duncan?

BTW: thinking about spring training starting is exciting this year. I wasn't excited last year for some reason, but this year seems different.

Quasimodo got another job in the MLB? Impressive.

Any chance we could pick up his cousin, Chris "Elephant Man" Shelton?
