Do you guys see Newble receiving any PT once he comes back? The fact that he started last year and this year could easily not see any PT speaks volumes on how good Ferry(god why does this have to be his last name) has been as a GM thus far.

Re: Question...

Maybe not immediately, but I see Newble forcing his way ahead of both Jackson and Pavlovic. Newble is a good worker off the ball, and if he can stick his open jumpers his value will be high in a limited role.

It is always good to give Luke and Sasha minutes, but if we are serious about contending, we cannot be babying them ahead of a veteran if he is performing.

While I usually reside on the side of optimism, look at it like this: he hasn't played a minute thus far, even in the pre-season he barely saw minutes. I do like his D but Luuuuuuuuuke is getting better and better. Sasha is still an enigma to me. I just hope one of these guys pans out. I do believe one of them will be shipped somewhere for a nice backup center to Z. I like Henderson, but he isn't exactly your prototypical C. Imagine if Z goes down. I am not saying it will end all aspirations of landing in the playoffs, but his presence will sorely be missed. A true backup center would be nice.

Re: Question...

Also, I'm not the smartest man alive, but Newble isn't exactly what I call a high-octane performer. He plays solid D but rarely hits the open J(actually he impressed me last year with his ability to do so) but i thought of it as a fluke

Re: Question...

We are not looking for Ira to play a major role. His strengths are tough nosed defense, which while not always being great, he can really get physical which is a nice mixup with our current bunch. Ira works off the ball and is a smart player. He isn't overly talented, but he knows his role and sticks to it. He has the ability to stick the open jumper. This is the X-factor. If he can shoot the open J at a decent clip, his value rises. Without that shot, he should definately sit behind Sasha and Luke.

Re: Question...

he is a bigger version of Snow(and @ a different position). A very nice roll player, but ultimately not in our future plans. As you see, what do you think our biggest need is? I think it is a top notch PG. I love DJ coming off the bench. Snow's roll right now is perfect. But for next year, I see us going after a PG in the draft or via FA. JMO

Re: Question...

Newble - started last year, not even missed this year
AV - huge for us last year, not even missed this year (well, we might be 7-1 if he was here for the first Memphis game)

Newble probably only gets spot duty when he does get healthy. AV will get regular playing time, though.

Re: Question...

End of last year's Newble is probably more consistent than current Luke Jackson. Luke has shown some good things, but has really shown some holes offensively. Newble actually shot a decent percentage from the 3, especially late in the season. Basically, the guy can hit the open shot. Newble's problem is that hes been injured for virtually the entire mike brown tenure, so he probably doesn't know the D that well. Also, he hasn't had a chance to gel with the rest of the team.

i do think Newble can be a valuable piece, he can D up pretty well, in case we need extra defense or something. Though with Hughes and Snow, maybe not that valuable

Re: Question...

Since Newble is going to come in late from being injured, I don't see him being as productive as he was before last season ended.

I think his game is going to dip a little. Which is a shame, because he was playing some solid ball for 2 months before last season. He was playing acceptional D, his 15 footer was sinking in, and on occasion he would finish a fast break.

Last season's Ira was probably the closest "Atlanta Ira" we were going to get.

Re: Question...

Perhaps Ira last year was better than Luke is right now, but Luke has more upside. What we need to contend for a title this year is Luke to progress beyond where Newble was, AV to return and bring what he brought last year, and the rest of the team to stay healthy. That would give us a deep 9 man playoff rotation and enough shooters, passers, rebounders, defenders to compete with anyone.

Newble, all of last year, was not very good. Towards the end he really picked up his game. But, he realistically averaged 8 ppg, 3 rpg, 1 apg, as a starter.

He is a great defender. I'll give him that. He will work perfectly in the defensive system and will be vocal about rotations. He's not the man-man stopper everyone raves about, but he won't miss his rotations. He does his part.

But it's his offense that is just plain horrid. Yes, he shot at a high percentage. But those shots were the true open shots. Pretty much, his shot selection is exactly like Luke's right now. The difference? Newble would pass it back to the guy he got it from and continue to do nothing on offense. Luke would fake, then penetrate to create something. Soon enough, when he gets comfortable, he'll take harder shots. But for now, I give him the inexperience card in his shot selection. You can't give that to Newble.

Newble has little potential for growth. His defense is better, and will be utilized when our rotations are just plain lost, but the main minutes, the guy off the bench, should be going to Luke, or Sasha, depending on who earns those minutes. Sasha was given that opportunity last season, but barely squeaked passed Lucious Harris. Luke's already ahead of Sasha this year.

One shocking dilemma: Newble isn't even listed in the player directory on NBA.com...

... and then fumble the ball and cause a turnover..

That happens about half the time. You notice when he turns it over. You forget when he dishes it out then gets passed to the right person after that, following his lead in the offense. A lot of his good passing goes unnoticed because it doesn't show up on the box score.

I don't get the love some people have for Ira Newble: the dude is simply is not a good ballplayer whether you want him to be a role player or not.

Defense: overrated, got torched plenty of times last year but somehow he got a pass because other players were even worse
Shooting: good if no one is within 5 feet of him. Forget it if he actually has to move his feet
Playmaker/Passing: lol

Once again fundamentals go out the door. You talk up Luke and all his "non box score" activities, but disregard Ira's play which is exactly that. Newble works hard off the ball on offense and defense. We dont need a playmaker in his role. We want someone who will take the open shot and make them at a decent clip and play good defense. Luke is active and all that which is exactly true, but no different to Newble. You guys rave about Luke's playmaking ability which yes is a strength. But in the role we have, that skillset is not overly required. We want an off ball player, hense my callings for Sasha. Anyways.......
