Jason Lloyd's final thoughts

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
We’re rounding third base going into the final stretch of the regular season,” James said.

'Now make like a tree and... Get the fuck out of my bar!' apparently second half LBJ uses half analogies instead of using words like 'humble' wrong.

Wait for the ESPN slow news day "Lebron interested in following Jordan . . . to test his MLB abilities (written as fact backed by "anonymous sources" and backed up by sudden baseball references".

I liked Lloyd's description of JR, Shump, and Mozgov, as the "little three" in his Final Thoughts from today. I vote that this should be their new official nickname.

5. For all of the talk of the Cavs’ Big Three, I don’t think it’s an overstatement to declare the Little Three of Smith, Shumpert and Timofey Mozgov have saved the Cavs’ season. “The three of them have really changed the fortunes of this team because of their particular skill sets, but more importantly the attitude they brought and the way they fit right in with our guys,” David Blatt said. “They’re all good players and very good people. They’ve all jelled with their teammates quickly and easily and naturally. We know the three of them can play and they’ve shown that since they’ve come here.”

Also, what is this "financial meeting" with Dan Gilbert and the players? What do they talk about? I thought there are quite a few restrictions as to what owners and players can talk about in-season.

10. The Cavs are staying over in New York again Sunday and will fly Monday to Detroit. They will not practice, but instead are scheduled to go to Quicken Loans headquarters for a financial meeting with team owner Dan Gilbert. He has held similar meetings in past years with the players at Quicken when schedules allowed.

J.R. will be starting for the foreseeable future:
6. The original plan was for Shumpert to supplant Smith in the starting lineup, but that has obviously been tabled at least for now. The Cavs have won 16 of their last 18, so now is not the time to start juggling things. Besides, Smith is enjoying this starting role and even told me the other day he prefers to start.

Ice cold:
9. Every time James comes to New York, he gets a question that is somehow related to either playing in New York or wondering why he never did. It happened again Sunday when a New York writer asked if he ever thought about what could’ve been had he chosen the Knicks in 2010. James’ answer was a simple, "No."

I have no inside information but my guess is a financial meeting with the team is probably reminding them to plan for their future financially. Maybe Gilbert is providing some insights from his experiences and/or having special guests in to talk.

Gilbert has done it for a long time. Gives money management and spending advice to these young guys who suddenly have millions to spend. A lot of these dudes go broke or get suckered by scummy "investors" or hangers on.

He was doing back even the last time Lebron was here.

I think it's wise to reward the players (extra night in New York) when things are going well, and also to not over-practice during what will be a seriously busy stretch.

As a joke, people in the game thread were calling the Knicks game a practice, but that's exactly what it was. They may not have another "real" practice until March 9 or March 14.

LLoyd is really bringing it this year, love his final thoughts nearly as much as windys old blog.

Its good that gilbert is trying to avoid the plague of bankrupt millionaire sportsman that seem to come out of the woodwork every season (amon ones for example)

I like Lloyd, but nothing all that interesting or new from his final thoughts tonight so I wanted to instead mention ask/about Skolnick. I read one of his postgame articles for the first time this season tonight and thought it was well done.(took me months to realize he's on the Cavs/LeBron beat and not just a Miami press corps stalker)

Also nothing groundbreaking in it but he just took the approach of using a quote by the opposition(SVG) and framing it into a really well structured article imo. There are a few lines that sme might get defensive about and the articles URL is a bit sensationalized considering the overall tone of the article is very positive. Has he been doing good work all year?

I thought these were interesting:
4. James grew up idolizing Michael Jordan, but he never thought he could reach that level, so he aimed his focus on guys like Pippen, Penny Hardaway and Allen Iverson because he thought that was more realistic. Now he is well past them and on his way to the all-time legends.

And:
9. Funny moment with LeBron this morning. We were talking to him a few days ago about Rivals’ ridiculous new idea to start ranking sixth grade football players. With kids specializing younger and younger and taking weight training more seriously at an earlier age, I asked James how old he was when he started taking weight training seriously.

10. “Twenty-four,” he said. “I ate McDonalds my first couple years in the NBA. I didn’t stretch, I didn’t ice, it didn’t matter. I was 18, I could do whatever I wanted to.”

LeBron wasn't even aiming to maximize his physical potential until twenty-four? :doh (1):

Kevin showing his basketball IQ and game-planning:
20. Love thought the Cavs had an advantage because the Pistons’ bigs aren’t used to chasing guys to the 3-point line. Fourteen of Love’s 16 shots were 3-pointers and he made eight of them, falling one shy of matching J.R. Smith’s record of nine 3-pointers made against the Pistons. Smith did it three years ago as a member of the Denver Nuggets and no one has ever made more against Detroit.

More:
25. Kendrick Perkins went through an extensive pregame workout with four assistant coaches to give him the basics of the Cavs’ system, but he wasn’t expecting to play against the Pistons. When Mozgov left with early foul trouble, however, Perk was getting off the bench late in the first half. He only played two minutes, scored a basket and committed a pair of fouls.

26. “They were calling plays,” Perkins said. “I didn’t know what they were running.”

29. The rest of the league, meanwhile, is crumbling. Chris Bosh is out for the year with blood clots on his lung. Kobe Bryant is done for the season, Kevin Durant’s foot hasn’t been right most of the season, Russell Westbrook had his issues early on, Rookie of the Year favorite Jabari Parker was lost to a torn ACL, Dwyane Wade’s knee has again been a lingering issue, the Pistons lost Brandon Jennings for the season to a knee injury, LaMarcus Aldridge is gutting through a torn ligament in his thumb, Steph Curry now has a foot issue, Dwight Howard is out with a knee injury and Rajon Rondo is basically playing with a broken face. Now Rose. The Cavs, meanwhile, continue to whistle past the graveyard. Aside from the Hawks, it’s looking more and more as if the East is theirs for the taking.

League is going to get wrecked. Talented and smart. Yikes.
