Browns unveiling “cutting-edge” uniforms next year

Posted by Mike Florio on March 4, 2014, 3:31 PM EST

It’s been known for a year that the Browns will unveil new uniforms next year. Beyond owner Jimmy Haslam explaining that the helmets won’t change, details have been scant.

On Tuesday, Browns president Alec Scheiner provided an update on the process, which will culminate on the sheet being pulled off the new uniforms right before the 2015 draft.

“We’ll have cutting-edge uniforms that link back to our history,” Scheiner told Bull & Fox of 92.3 The Fan in Cleveland on Tuesday. “I’m really excited about our direction. We’ve been working with the NFL and Nike for almost a year now. We have another year until we roll out our uniforms. I’d be very surprised if our fans don’t love our new-look uniforms.”

The Browns will become at least the sixth team to undergo a significant redesign since the NFL partnered with Nike in 2012. Two of the new uniforms (Jaguars and Buccaneers) are not attractive. The Seahawks’ uniforms looked iffy at first; stellar play since the helmets, jerseys, and pants were unveiled has caused most to warm up to the duds. The Vikings’ new uniforms amounted to an upgrade, notwithstanding the too-trendy matte finish on the helmet and the unconventional numbers. The Dolphins’ had a dramatic logo overhaul as part of a more subtle shift in the overall uniform.

If the Browns plan to link back to their history, there’s not much of a uniform history to link back to. When the team was initially founded, the numbers had a shadowing effect, which was trendy about 20 years ago — and which could mean it’s time for it to become trendy again. The uniform hasn’t changed that much since then, with periodic orange pants and brown pants and at one point an ill-advised orange jersey.

In the interim, Browns fans who have set aside the funds to buy a new jersey in 2014 may want to wait to make the purchase until next year.

For Browns fans, waiting until next year has pretty much become a way of life.

So the team logo is changing from literally nothing to a brown, steaming pile?

One would have to think that Nike is already measuring the instant reaction from fans on the Bucs uniforms. Hope that bodes well for what they'd be doing to the Browns. You'd also think that the pro-bowl uniforms may have been a bit of a test..

I just wish they would actually do something to the helmets; I'm exhausted of plain shiny orange. Some numbers, a matte finish, anything...

I'd love to see matte finish with numbers on one side. Would definitely be a cool, unique look.

I'm fairly certain Haslam already stated that they won't touch the helmets.

Because he signed an agreement with Randy Lerner not to.

I wouldn't be so sure that JH3 is bound by the "agreement" that much... I mean, is Randy going to take the team back? I think the answer to that would be a resounding "hell no"... Maybe a statement about how he's disappointed with the change, but I bet he wouldn't say tiddly winks about a change.

You gotta the think that the players have been shown the progress in the uniforms changes by now.

Joe Haden posted on his IG, the uniforms used in the Pro Bowl - and he did that randomly - as if him and other players we're shown updates on Browns uni's, as they could possibly be similar to the Pro Bowl uniforms they wore - and could be an indicator on which direction Nike and Browns are taking in these uniforms changes.

I think it's worth taking note on that.

Please no. Those uniforms (the white) were so bland. Plus that design wouldn't be able to link to the past as Scheiner has stated they would.

They'll probably incorporate a version of this jersey as it is has the most unique number font in the franchise history

This set of mock ups aren't too bad. Maintain the classic look but tweak it enough to look modern

altough instead of the brown topped socks, I'd like to see the same striping as the jersey

I like them. Maybe I am in the minority here, but I would love to see us possibly get an actual logo. Either be some kind of dog, Brownie the Elf, whatever, but I would like to see that. I mean we have a damn helmet on the 50. I would like to keep the helmets plain, like in the link you shared, but maybe instead of it saying "Browns" on the chest, there you could have a small logo above the #'s, a logo at the 50. If they do it though, you can't fuck it up like the Pelicans mascot. It better go through so many channels to where they know a major-majority of the public will accept.

I like that helmet, especially with the brown face mask. The Brown jersey without the stripes and orange pants is a good look too, I think. I like the idea of having orange pants as an away jersey instead of just the plain white, the white is just a little boring. I think those two jerseys along with our normal Brown jersey/white pants look would be a good way to update the jerseys without doing too much.

I like keeping the helmets free of a logo, minus the numbers on one side like I said earlier. But I would love if our Primary logo was the dog. Helmet is fine, bbut it shouldn't be primary. Put the dog on the 50 yard line, letter head, pants, etc.

Also another thing that I want, and it would be unique to the NFL is to have the team name big across the chest. Just like what the Oklahoma Sooners do. How sweet would it be to have BROWNS or CLEVELAND across the chest?

Also, and maybe I'm too much on the college train, but what about dog bone stickers on the helmets like Georgia does? Again, would be something no other NFL team does.

I was kinda under the impression that the whole dog thing was done with for the most part. I like the Elf, but not enough to add him to the uniform in any capacity. I'd say just make the Elf the primary logo, keep the helmets blank (add numbers maybe, but PLEASE no logo), and make very minimal changes to the jerseys, but introduce different options with the pants.
