John DeFilippo - Browns OC

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Didn't see this mentioned away, but the Rams asked to interview Flip yesterday.

It will be interesting to see if we try to hold off to see a the HC would want him.
Doing this without a concrete plan to retain DeFillipo would be simply assholish. Would be a great way for the new FO to quickly turn off staff candidates.

Good for him if he gets the OC job. The Rams have the personnel right now to run the ball well, and a play-action coach would have some success there with at least a slight QB upgrade.

Prove to me this was guy was better than Carthon.

Browns finished the season #21 in passing yards and #22 in rushing yards despite having the worst collective skill position talent in the NFL. That's worth something. I wasn't all that impressed with the offense, to be honest, but with better talent perhaps he can be more productive for someone else.

I've kind of thought that having a defensive-minded HC and keeping Flip for the sake of offensive continuity might be a pretty good idea. Probably help settle down some of the unhappiness among guys like Thomas, and I really think the offense overachieved given the talent at the skill positions. Gotta give Flip serious credit for seeing Barnidge's talent and taking advantage of it.

This puzzles me a bit. I mean, if you think he got the offense to get that ranking despite having the worst skill position talent in the league...why wouldn't you want to see what he could do with better talent here?

There'd seem to be some value in keeping offensive continuity and not requiring everyone to learn a new playbook yet again.

I think he will remain. Haslam hinted at keeping some of our staff. That leads me to believe that someone coming on board already said certain coaches would be kept. My guess is, Hue Jackson comes in to keep Flip. Flip worked with Jackson in Oakland.

I would like to keep him if possible. Like others, I thought he did solid with what he had to work with.

For me personally, I saw enough of Flip to think he is a good offensive coach. DId I like his philosophy? Not really. It might help a young QB with Manziel's skillset acclimate to the NFL, but I don't believe its the best offense out there. I also think "Build around Manziel" is the right route to go anymore.

The Browns are in a complete and total reboot of the franchise from top to bottom. If the Browns bring in a guy who is a vertical passing offense type guy like Hue Jackson, what's the point of retaining the old OC, who is a dink and dunk bootleg type playcaller? Let the guy explore his options, because other franchises need to let the Browns poke around the same recycling bin.

I think Flip and everyone else in Berea probably agrees with that. But the decision to play Manziel wasn't Flip's -- he could only do what he was told to do. I actually thought he did a good job with McCown. If the defense hadn't been so atrocious, we might have won more games.

Agreed -- if we bring in an offensive-oriented guy like Hue Jackson who doesn't think Flip is a good fit. Although Jackson probably is someone who might be happy to keep Flip.

But what if we hire a defensive-oriented HC like Matt Patricia? He then not only has to hire a staff and revamp the defensive side of the ball, but then go out and higher an OC. And since we can't make a lateral hire by bringing in a successful OC from another organization, that means we either have to hire 1) a failed retread offensive coorodinator who is currently unemployed, or 2) take a risk on some up and coming position coach for whom this will be his first coordinator job. And that means the players getting used to an entirely new system again....

Obviously, the new HC should get his choice of offensive coordinator. It just seems to me that if we've identified someone who did better than expected with the talent we have, and there is the additional virtue of the players being more familiar with the offensive system, it would be nice if the new HC's choice (assuming again that he's a defensive guy) matched up with a good, available candidate like Flip. I lean towards seeing a guy fail before replacing him.

Flip is from Youngstown. This was a homecoming. He also came to the team because he worked well with Pettine, and Manziel was a good fit for his offensive concepts.

If he chooses to stay, even if that means less say in the offensive philosophy, he probably can since he is under contract. Who knows, he might be excited to develop a Goff or Lynch along with McCown. What I don't think would work is to deny him the ability to explore his options when NOBODY knows who the head coach is going to be.

Flip and Hue Jackson did not work for the Raiders at the same time. FYI

I wouldn't be opposed to keeping him if he's willing to retool his offense around our new QB, but it's not like he's some amazing OC that needs to stay. I won't really be disappointed to keep him or lose him. It just depends on who we bring in to coach the team and if he can vibe with what they want to do.

Not sure how we can expect our QBs to understand the entire playbook when the OC doesn't understand it.
