JR Smith

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Think he gets one game: knew Crowder was back there and swung to hit. Doubt he tried to hit him in the head and since Crowder was behind him it backs up that he was pissed about the shove and trying to fight back and not knock him out.

I would've preferred JR to throw a subtle elbow but it is what it is. Crowder deserved what he got. Fucking scrub thought he was the second coming of Ron Artest.

Just a couple of months ago, JR was supposed to be the throwaway in the trade for Shumpert. Now guys are talking about his looming suspension like he's the game changer. He's been great for us this season, but we most definitely don't need him to win a series. We have guys who can pick up the slack while he's gone. Heck, Chicago is a top 3 defensive team, especially in terms of 3 point percentage against. I think the more we see Shumpert on the floor, the better. I don't see Smith hanging in there with Butler anyway. I'm more concerned about not having Love for the series. The Bulls have a huge front line. I want to see Marion as our backup 4 only when Mirotic is playing the 4. But The 3-4-5 minutes are going to be scary the entire series if Love is out. Basically 3 positions unevenly distributed between LeBron, Marion, TT, Mozgov, James Jones and possibly Perkins.

3- LeBron (35 min) Marion (5 min) JJ (8 min)
4- TT (25 min) LeBron (6 min) Marion (12 min) JJ (5 min)
5 - Mozgov (35 min) TT (10 min) Perkins (3 min)

Obviously this is just my current assumption but we're going to need big guys out there because Gasol, Noah and Taj Gibson will have the size on most of our guys. The 1-2 positions are going to be tough as well, but if Kyrie can hit about 40 minutes a game and Shumpert can do about 35, the 21 left over can be filled by Miller, Delly, JJ and possibly Harris. It sucks that we lost two guys for at least one game today, but I'm hoping that pushes the team to be even better and put effort into playing hard.

It's not just JR being out, It's JR+Love being out at the same time for multiple games.
That will indeed hurt us.

Where's the precedent for a multi-game suspension? At worst, I could see the NBA saying it should be a 3 game suspension but being dropped to 1 because of the officials not taking the steps to keep the game in line. But realistically, everything else this season has warranted a 1 game suspension. The playoffs doesn't suddenly make it worse. Crowder having a glass jaw doesn't make it worse. JR Smith's history doesn't make it worse.

For everyone that compares Smith to Artest, they seem to forget that Artest went into the fucking stands and was ALWAYS going to punished harshly because of it. Even with Smith's history, nothing compares to that.

Was it @Czvosec that wanted to do a $10 donation bet? I'll take you up on it.
Sure, what are the terms of the bet? I choose where you donate the $10 if Smith gets a suspension of 2 or more games and if it's less than 2 it is your choice?

Exactly! The only guy suspended for conduct on the court since 2010 for more than 5 games was Ron Artest for his blatant elbow of James Harden. He got 7 games

Andrew Bynum got 5 games() for about killing JJ Barea in obvious frustration.

Charlie Villanueva got 5 games(reduced to 4) for his fight with Ryan Hollins in which he threw a ball punch, a rib blow and even then he only got 5 games for going berserk after he got thrown out and then tried to enter our locker room.

Dexter Pittman got 3 games for looking at Lance Stephenson and clotheslining him elbow first.

Rajon Rondo got 2 games for a flat out brawl with Kris Humphries that ended up in the stands.

Kevin Love got 2 games for stepping on Luis Scola's face.

and there's a few more 2 game suspensions from Jason Smith(flagrant on Blake Griffin), Demarcus Cousins(confrontation with Spurs broadcaster), Thomas Robinson(elbow to Jonas Jerebko's neck), Larry Sanders(started an altercation and refused to leave the court), Rajon Rondo(throwing a ball at the ref), Quentin Richardson(fighting Gerald Henderson), Andrew Bynum(flagrant on Michael Beasley), Marvin Williams(altercation with shawn Williams), Brian Cook(flagrant foul) and Ryan Hollins(punching DeShawn Stevenson and hitting Dirk Nowitzki).

That's it for guys with multi-game suspensions. I didn't watch all of them but every one I did watch was worse than JR's foul. I would say he should get just the ejection or a 1 game suspension based on precedent but 2 would be the absolute max. Anything beyond that would be ridiculously unprecedented. I'm betting he gets 1

Idk what you saw but jrs looks worse than all of those. And I'm on his side

The league will want to send a strong message to try and stop this from happening in subsequent games this playoffs season. Unfortunately we are in the wrong place in the wrong time on this and JR may be made an example of. If he got 1 game suspensions before, they probably have to do 2 games this time, maybe 3. This is a high profile case and I think they will want to send a strong message. Unfortunately, we will get no justice for the injury to Love. Just have to suck it up and move on.

We all knew the moment when JR would do something stupid was about to come. Didn't expect such a bad timing though considering the Love injury. F*ck....

It doesn't matter what happened before, it matters what JR did. This will be a multiple game suspension. I'm thinking 2 games, but it could be more. Don't think it will be though.
Of course it matter what happened before it was continuation of the same play all within 3-5 seconds.

The ball went behind him he needed to turn around. This all occured while Jr smith was in the act of attempting to rebound the ball. He watched the shot go up was pushed in the back as he tried to pull up and swung his arm around. it looks pretty violent in instant reply People keep statting this is worse than a variety of intentional fouls in the past. JR smith wasnt the aggressor here. Croder didnt body up on JR Smith he took two hands and pushed squarely below the back of the neck.

Did JR overreact . absolutely it was a warranted ejection.. that shouldnt be more than a one game suspension. Now if the NBA factors in his history I could see them adding a game to it but not because of the foul itself

Sorry guys, but this thread is embarrassing now.

The dude cold cocked a man. Sucker punched, out cold, knee broke, flatlined him. Bullshit he was boxing out.

More malicious than all of the other multi suspension games and the result remarkably worse. Some posters are seeing this as innaccuratrly and biased as the celts defending olynk.

Most of us aren't defending his reaction, we're defending the fact that Crowder initiated the sequence. He fouled J.R. at least twice from behind and nearly leveled him like a linebacker prior to being boxed out.

J.R.'s reaction wasn't necessary but if the refs are gonna let you get mugged and risk injury, you have to do something. J.R. did. He's just the one that got caught.

I thought it being a flagrant-2 was warranted but anything beyond a one game suspension IMO is BS.

Not getting Ray Allen is looming larger now..maybe Ray would have been a bit more of an effective sub for JR and K Love than Jones/Miller/Marion would be.
Fuck ray ray, I'll take the guys who wanted to be here over his corpse.
Shumps got this.

I have to think the NBA will look at this entire game and determine it was the refs who let it get out of hand. I am very sure they will take the game as a whole in regards to JR. They almost have to. Why? Because the Cavs have the very most to lose because of the refs while the Celtics have zero to lose no matter what. Even if the NBA suspends Olynic, what does that do? Nothing. Suspending JR does do something.... it screws the Cavs and gives the Bulls a much easier ride to the ECF. Does the NBA really want this if they look at the whole picture? I don't think so.

JR gets a one game suspension and a fine.

Sucker punch? He swung his arm wildly to clear space with Crowder BEHIND him. A sucker punch is what Melo did to mardy collins.

If Smith hits Crowder on the arm it's a tech at worst. He just happened to knock that fake tough guy out.

BTW, just to reiterate my previous point.... PRECEDENT MATTERS. It's ALWAYS used in determining punishment and if you want to talk about someone having standing to act legally, suspending someone for some random amount that is wholly outside of established precedent is EXACTLY how you bring on legal action. Even if the league tried to lay a heavy hand here, JR and the Player's Union would get it reduced in arbitration or in court.
Jermaine O'neal was able to get his suspension reduced form 25 games to 15 games FOR FIGHTING FANS due to a District Court determining the punishment "excessive". Don't think for a second that the same wouldn't happen if you just randomly throw the book at one guy. Anyone who has ever been in a position of disciplining employees knows, precedent matters and you can't just randomly treat two employees differently without making yourself legally vulnerable.

BTW, this applies with Olynyk as well. The league can't look at either case emotionally. I think they'll review the play and if they determine it to be "unnecessary and excessive" they'll award a Flagrant 2 and have Olynyk sit the first game next year.

For everyone arguing one way or the other about punishment of either guy, keep precedent in mind. Many here want Olynyk hammered (and some even Smith) well beyond normal punishment but you can't have unpredictable, uneven, arbitrary punishment without bringing competitive balance into question. The owners, coaches, players need to know that punishment will be meted out with an even hand.
