Just some interesting stats that I managed to compile... I think we can tell whether or not Savage made the right call to sign Shaffer to the contract that he got and if he's an "elite" LT...

Sacks Allowed

Kevin Shaffer = 3.5
Jonathan Ogden = 3.5
Orlando Pace = 4.5
Walter Jones = 10.5
Marvel Smith = 10
Chris Samuels = 4
Bryant McKinnie = 7
Tarik Glenn = 3
Willie Anderson = 3
Jordan Gross = 5.25
Flozell Adams = 7.25
John Tait = 4
Levi Jones = 1
Matt Light = 7.5
Jammal Brown = 3
D'Brickashaw Ferguson = 10
Marcus McNeil = 5
Jeff Backus = 9.5

Holding Calls

Kevin Shaffer = 5
Jonathan Ogden = 0
Orlando Pace = 0
Walter Jones = 2
Marvel Smith = 2
Chris Samuels = 1
Bryant McKinnie = 4
Tarik Glenn = 3
Willie Anderson = 1
Jordan Gross = 0
Flozell Adams = 1
John Tait = 2
Levi Jones = 0
Matt Light = 1
Jammal Brown = 3
D'Brickashaw Ferguson = 1
Marcus McNeil = 0
Jeff Backus = 3

False Starts

Kevin Shaffer = 2
Jonathan Ogden = 1
Orlando Pace = 3
Walter Jones = 2
Marvel Smith = 2
Chris Samuels = 3
Bryant McKinnie = 1
Tarik Glenn = 7
Willie Anderson = 3
Jordan Gross = 6
Flozell Adams = 5
John Tait = 1
Levi Jones = 0
Matt Light = 5
Jammal Brown = 2
D'Brickashaw Ferguson = 1
Marcus McNeil = 5
Jeff Backus = 8

Let's take a close look...

Kevin Shaffer was tied for 5th in sacks allowed among that "elite" group of left tackles...

He was last in holding calls, which is something he obviously needs to brush up on...

He was tied for 3rd in false starts...

I'd say that's overall pretty good for our LT, to be honest... Considering that he played next to one of the worst guards in the league, Joe Andruzzi...

Thoughts?

Those stats are useless when they don't include hurries/pressures as well. I dunno where you would find comprehensive numbers like that, but when a guy gets beat there is a lot more to it than whether he gave up a sack or not.

He started the season (and his Browns debut) negating an 80 yard TD pass to Braylon on the first play of the season. So yeah he fits right in here.

That doesnt really show anything....

It doesnt show if he can push people back to help the run, withstand a pass rush or anything..

If he was an elite guy, Atlanta would have never let him go.

I double say this. (No need for me to retype it)

Kevin Shaffer, an elite LT?

Honestly, we probably haven't had an elite offensive lineman on this team in 20 years. Well, I take that back, we have LCB but chances are we'll never get to see him as "elite" anymore. Even when we have above average guys they are hidden in mediocrity until they are shipped off to another team (Sean O'Hara, Jeff Faine). Is this ever going to end? Only when we start drafting guys and building depth on the O-line.

I'm going to defend Savage and Shaffer here, because no one seems to get "it"

You are missing a very key fact in your argument that I'm surprised no one else picked up on. You call him an elite tackle because of his contract, but yet you don't state what his contract is and compare them to all the other starting LT's in the NFL.

Do that comparison and get back to me...........

He signed a 7 year $36 million dollar contract, with only $12.5 million in guarantees.

That is a contract for an average LT. Since everyone doesn't know this, LT is a HIGH PRICED position and we have an average LT for average LT money, so everyone get off this misconception that he is an ELITE LT because of his pay.

He's actually paid less than AVERAGE LT money, the average salary for a LT is $6 million. Left Tackle is the second highest paid position in the NFL people
