WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. -- Los Angeles Lakers' All-Star guard Kobe Bryant announced Thursday he has offered eight college students a chance to go to Italy and discover the country where he spent part of his childhood.

"It's really exciting for us, to have the opportunity to do something like this," said Bryant, referring to the Vivo Foundation that he started. The foundation's first program, called Vivo Del Mondo, will organize a nine-day, all-expense paid trip to Italy for eight black and Hispanic college students.

The students, who were selected by two scholarship funds, will visit Rome, Florence and Venice beginning next week.

"With me growing up overseas -- being exposed to another world, another culture, another way of life -- to able to open those doors for somebody else is special," Bryant said.

Bryant, 27, spent eight years of his childhood in Italy while his father, Joe, was establishing himself as a basketball star there. He speaks Italian fluently and has returned to Italy many times since he and his family left in 1992.

Speaks fluid italian?very interesting and a very nice thing for kobe to do.

ur not 8 anymore...now ur 24??? why not send 24 kids.

why is this even being posted??? other guys have done much nicer things, yet because he is the almighty KOBE BRYANT it gets posted.

who gives a sh!t.

Because i felt it should be posted cause i read a damn article on it.I dont care what you think, dont hate on the damn guy because he did something nice.

Kobe actually speaks 8 languages, or so I read in an article back in the day.

I heard Kobe made a motion to President Bush to add an 8th day to the week called Bryday in between Tuesday and Wednesday.

August is officialy Kobe Bryant Appreciation Month and they're thinking of bumping the white dude off the hit TV Show "24" in favor of Kobe Bryant. The show would air at 8 p.m. on Bryday.

Not sure why anyone acts negatively to anyone doing good by the community. Well done Kobe for this act. Its not like he has to do this.

yeah...but you don't see this getting posted when any other NBA player does it do you??

Well thats at our discretion. You only have to look up cavs.com to see all the Eric Snows charity work, or LeBron's stuff. Of course the superstar players will get more limelight for this. But with that usually comes the bigger $'s for the concerned charities. props to any sports star that does this, whether we hate them or not.

KOBE HATERS suck

Wade saved 3 cats from a burning apartment in Miami last night but when a firefighter approached him with some oxygen afterwards he was immediately whistled for a personal foul.

I really praise gilbert arenas for adopting the child that lost his whole family.I really love that story but seriously cavs1 just shut up.
