While Hardwick and McNeill are signed to long-term contracts, left guard Kris Dielman, perhaps the Chargers' best offensive lineman this season, could be on his way out of town.
Contract talks between Dielman's agent and the team broke off at the end of November, when the sides differed on Dielman's value by about $1 million a year. Dielman now is willing to leave, and there figure to be many teams faxing him offers once the free-agency period begins at 9 p.m. on March 1.
“He's been very important to our success and what we've been able to do,” running back LaDainian Tomlinson said this week. “I think it'll be sad, or bad, if we lose him.”
It is likely Dielman will command in excess of $6 million a year over five or six seasons, significantly more than what the Chargers and his agent were talking about during the season.
The Chargers could also designate him as a franchise player, but that would likely cost them more than $8 million for one season.
He was a backup DT to Jamaal Williams (Top 5 DT in the NFL) and they asked him to move to guard..he worked on his technique and really improved...
Beats the hell out of Andruzzi doesn't it? Think about it...if we signed this guy possibly Steinbach and drafted Thomas we'd be looking at...
Shaffer Dielman Fraley/Bentley(08) Steinbach Thomas
27 million or so is what I heard we had 6 mill for Kris 6 for Eric add some DLine or Clements and blow the rest on the rooks..
Sorry about the pipe dream there..but I can dream right? I'd take any 3 of those guys..they'd definitely boost the talent level and make some current starters backups..therefor increasing depth.
