Marreese Speights Has a Player Option

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Re: Welcome Marreese Speights

I felt uncomfortable while watching that.

:chuckles:

What was with him just playing with his balls the whole time. Sounds a lot like Sam Sam, excited for these interviews!

Re: Welcome Marreese Speights

I cant blame him, I used to do that all the time whrn playing basketball and soccer. Its the compression shorts. Apparently it was bad enough that my mother felt the need to bring it up. "Stop messing with yourself!" It was a completely subconscious behavior.

Re: Welcome Marreese Speights

That really is very inapporopriate.

Get your fucking hand off your weiner, especially being interviewed...let alone that interview was bad too, haha

Re: Cavs Trade w/ Memphis (Speights, Selby, Ellington, and #1 pick for Leuer)

He will never be a starter for a good team, but he can be instant offense big off the bench.

Realistically, this is dead-on. Knuckleheads don't magically gain I.Q. at 25. If you read his scouting reports from the draft, he's basically the exact same guy. That's not exactly a good sign for those expecting some magic light bulb to go on. But in the role you described, he can be pretty valuable as long as the ball doesn't stop every time it hits his hands. That's going to be Byron's biggest challenge with him, I think.

Re: Welcome Marreese Speights

Speights is exactly the type of player the Cavs should be going after.

High talent, little risk. If we get lightening in a bottle, we've got a very talented big man. If not, no harm, he's gone in 2014 anyway.

I don't have my hopes up regarding Marreese, but this is spot on. I don't know why we waste so many development minutes on players who belong in the NBADL or have no long term role with the team. Marreese is one of many young players that hit the open market every year who's disappointed in his early career, but in the right place, used the right way, with the right coach ... or just a little more maturity ... could turn his career in to something.

There are always going to be a ton of young players who don't figure things out until their second or third team. Heck, Detroit was Chauncey Billup's 4th team.

Because you need to fill out a roster, we have many first round picks coming, and getting Speights doesnt happen every day. But, to Grant's favor, he pulled the trigger quickly when the opportunity came up.

You preach it all the time Jon, patience.

This means our roster will have players like Sam Sam that really are just filler until we can draft or trade for someone better.

Re: Welcome Marreese Speights

His ceiling is Drew Gooden 2.0

My guess is if he could reach that he could be useful.

I have very low expectations for Speights.

He's like Sessions in my opinion, not because he plays like him but because Speights will:
  • temorarily patch a hole in the Cavs roster until a real piece can be found
  • make the games more watchable at times in the short term
  • possibly have some trade value near the dead line
  • won't move the needle on the win/loss meter.

But right now, there's a reason why Memphis had to pay a team to take him.

His current is Drew Gooden 2.0, His ceiling is a bit higher. When he gets the minutes, he puts up good, if not great numbers, but the drew gooden comparison is extremely fair since they are both kings of the hollowed stats.

The hope is Speights gets it enough to not be compared to Gooden. The reality is as a young big with offensive promise, he should at the very least be useful as an offensive big off the bench. (yes this also seems to be Zeller's role for the team eventually too)

Re: Welcome Marreese Speights

Can't wait to see Speights and the rest of the Memphis bench brigade in action on Friday. To hell with the Livingston/Miles/Casspi/Walton/Jones lineups

That's pretty much how I feel. Have liked Speights as a possible option for the Cavs but at the same time understood who he is as a player and that he's likely not a long term piece. He is an upgrade right now and will help. With where the Cavs are presently they can take the chance, bring him in and hope maybe he matures and improves on his weaknesses. If not then it's not a big deal and they were able to have some short term help.

I don't see him helping other than making the games easier to watch. I hope the Cavs make him look like a star and then flip him for a 2014 pick before Feb 21. That's probably the best outcome.

I was looking through the CBA to try and find out if there was any significance to the trade happening exactly 30 days before the trade deadline, but I couldn't find one.
