Marreese Speights Has a Player Option

Re: Welcome Marreese Speights

Add in ownership not wanting to spend the money as well. The Memphis trade is a perfect example. Their owner is sweating the finances so they're making lopsided trades and supposedly still shopping Gay. That is a team that could be pushing to the next level, but instead they're pulling back from the salary cap.

That's what I meant by ownership not understanding/exploiting the CBA, but ya. I'm sure those owners would love to have a top-tier, under the cap team, but many seem to reluctant to subject their fans/wallets to a few rough years in order to achieve that.

A bunch of good points in the last few posts. The ideal is for a rebuilding GM to not only build a contender, but to build in sustainability. But that takes not only a smart GM, but an owner with the money and the patience to let him do that. We're very, very fortunate in having both.

Re: Welcome Marreese Speights

The real problem in Memphis started years ago when they overpaid Randolph and Gay. Had they paid that pair each about $3-5 mil less a year, they probably wouldn't have been out bid and wouldn't be in this bind. No they had to make this move to grab enough breathing room to find a better way to unload those deals.

There's no way Randolph and Gay would still be Grizzlies if they were offered smaller contracts.

Yeah but sometimes you have to be willing to trade guys if you think you're going to have to pay them significantly more than they're worth. Honestly, it's even slightly better to let a guy walk for nothing than it is to destroy your salary cap to overpay. That's even more true now than it was under the old CBA.

I've always liked Rudy Gay, but the kid is making more than LeBron. That's ludicrous. Batum is another guy who got massively overpaid, and that contract is going to seriously hamper Portland in the next few years. They'll soon be in the same category as Memphis: a decent team that has a second-round ceiling and is overpaying for two second-tier talents in Aldridge and Batum (Batum is probably more third-tier, actually).

Re: Welcome Marreese Speights

Why would you trade Speights, putting money aside for now... He's a perfect 3rd legit big off the bench if he continues to play like this, which I believe he can. He says he feels loved by the fans/teammates/city, maybe he needs that comfort to take his game up a notch and perform consistently. Why not move forward with Tristan, Zeller, Speights and possibly Andy?

Because Speights is a role player on a short contract.

If you can flip him for an asset, you do it.

Rule #1 of rebuilding. Don't fall in love with role players. Focus on getting core pieces and then surround them with affordable, well fitting parts. Get the draft pick now if you can. If Speights looks like he might be a good third big to round out the front court rotation in 2014, the Cavs can just go and sign him then.

Re: Welcome Marreese Speights

Cavaliers general manager Chris Grant has been tracking Marreese Speights since the big man was playing at Florida. And Cleveland could certainly use a boost on the front line after announcing this week that Anderson Varejao would be lost for the season after his recent leg surgery left the Brazilian with a blood clot in his right lung.

All that said ...

Don't be shocked if the Cavaliers decide to move Speights on again before the Feb. 21 deadline.

The Cavs obviously aren't in the playoff hunt and word is they're already receiving interest in Speights, who possesses a $4.5 million player option for next season. The Cavs are also armed with $12 million in expiring contracts and roughly $4 million in leftover cap space for the summer, which means they've got the tools to continue to be active before this deadline.

Daniel Gibson and Omri Casspi, according to NBA front-office sources, are the most likely Cavs to be dealt along with Speights, who had to give his consent to be sent to Cleveland as one of the 13 players in the league this season (see Box No. 6 here for the detailed explanation) who had trade-blocking power related to his Bird rights.

Going back to the 2008 NBA draft, Marreese Speights had convinced himself he was coming to the Cavaliers.
However, the Philadelphia 76ers had other ideas. They picked the Florida product No. 16 overall. The Cavs ended up taking North Carolina State’s J.J. Hickson at 19.

“Cleveland was always a team I wanted to come to,” Speights said.

He had veto power on the trade from Memphis, but actually wanted to come to Cleveland, something that’s not said very often.

“No other team was that young that needed another big man,” Speights said. “It was a good opportunity to come here and get some playing time.”

In that draft, he toured with fellow bigs Hickson, JaVale McGee and Roy Hibbert for team workouts.

“Before I was drafted, I was here working out (for the Cavs) for like two weeks,” Speights said. “I’m glad I got an opportunity to finally get here after five years.”

Cavs coach Byron Scott said he’ll be used as the backup center behind Tyler Zeller. Scott said Tristan Thompson will stay at power forward with the first and second units.

“Just his size can help us,” Scott said. “He’s a guy who can make shots. He’s a little bigger than I thought he was. We need that size. We’re not expecting them to light the world on fire.”

The 6-foot-10, 255-pound Speights said he’d have no trouble learning the terminology of the offense and defense.

“They gave us a playbook,” he said. “The league is all the same plays with different names.”

Re: Welcome Marreese Speights

If we trade him I honestly feel sorry for him. He hasn't been mentored correctly and he seems psyched to be in Cleveland, and he is the first guy in awhile to actively try to get here. I'm personally sick of getting run over by bigger dudes. I'd like to see him stick.

Re: Welcome Marreese Speights

I understand that role players shouldn't be overvalued, but at the same time, 25 year old, 6'10 255 big men with good touch and shooting strokes don't just go on trees. If it's so easy to get that kind of player at a reasonable contract, then what are some examples of some that have been signed recently? Maybe a guy like Brandon Bass, who is smaller (can't play C), older, and a worse rebounder than Speights, and is getting paid 20 million over three years. I don't think Speights will command that much on the FA market, but I think he's better value, too.

If Speights "gets it" then he could be a really solid player off the bench.

It's just that sometimes, I'd rather stick with a relatively "known commodity" who still has some potential to prove. Say we get something like the 20th pick for Speights...is it really worth it to draft a guy who MIGHT be as good as Speights, not to mention have to wait a few more years for him to develop? I understand the need for a constant influx of young players and I'm really happy that Grant believe in that idea, but sometime we ARE going to need some somewhat proven players who can contribute immediately.

Speights is a bench player, so we likely won't get any picks for him. Speights was considered so worthless he was salary dump fodder on a team with play off aspirations. He has value to us because our big men have limited offensive games. I'd say he needs to drop some weight but, he's probably going to spend quite a bit of time at center, so it's probably to his advantage to be a little more husky. He clearly has talent, just not sure it's anything a play off team will be interested in. but hey, if jiri welsch can garner a 1st round pick i guess anything is possible.

I don't think Memphis considered him worthless. They just knew that every other team in the league knew they had to cut salary, and thus all the offers they were getting for Rudy Gay were garbage. Trading a few role-players rather than their starters allowed them to gain back leverage in potential negotiations for their better players. The bottom line is that Speights thus far has been a solid bench big who puts up an above-average PER. Memphis felt Leuer could do the same for much cheaper, and to be fair he did exactly that last year for the Bucks.

Speights, like Charilie Vilanueva, is one of those cases where PER is not a good indicator.

In 4 our of his 5 seasons, he's had poor +/- per 100 possessions.

You're exactly right but bringing in Speights, plus Ellison, is like littering the playing field with anti-tank mines. We will really want these guys (or equivalent roleplayers) next year when we start trying to mold the talent we have into more of a winner. First rounders and the like will make it easy to get cheap talent when we're near the luxury tax and are easier to trade. Unfortunately, the tank needs to protected by air support for this year and if that means trading Speights for future assets then so be it even if it feels like this::nutkick:
