Man I finally got watch Infinity War and was able to do it dodging all the spoilers. Man WTF killing all of those dude how depressing
Was the only way the movie could end... anything else wouldn't have been true to the comics, nor would it have made any sense. Thanos with the Gauntlet is damn near invincible -- in fact, in the comics he actually is invincible.
Possible spoiler(?)
The heroes never actually defeat him; and their entire plan of attack is really just a ruse, even if it costs them their lives. Unfortunately for them, they aren't aware that they have no chance but the person directing them to their deaths is completely aware that they're going to die.
Dr. Strange hints at this: I was an avid Silver Surfer reader back in the day but I don't think I picked up the Infinity Guantlet crossover series which I think was the same author as the 90's surfer. Basically I'm assuming the Dr Strange figured would be to setup Thanos like he won and then after the victory it would be whoever remained to reverse the outcome by stealing the guantlet and using the time stone after Thanos was satiated.
It would be awesome if we get a true Galactus in one of these movies and not whatever that was in Fantastic Four

Let's do this!
As an aside, I really hope Disney ends up picking up some of these Netflix shows for their own streaming service. I'd like to see them create an adult-oriented Marvel universe that includes stuff like Punisher, Daredevil (he could show up in the regular MCU too, but his best stories tend to be pretty violent), Deadpool, etc.
I'm under the understanding that Marvel has to wait multiple years before doing anything with those Netflix properties. Perhaps I've misunderstood the situation.
I think it's possible that they could pick them up as-is and continue them, much the same way Amazon picked up The Expanse, Hulu picked up Brooklyn 99, or the way Netflix has picked up a bunch of different shows canceled by other networks. I'm not sure what the situation is for full-scale reboots, but I have to imagine that, after the way Marvel lost the rights to X-Men, Spider-Man, and Fantastic Four for two decades due to the contracts they signed, they probably protected themselves better this time around.
And if they are doing reboots, they'd likely want to wait a few years anyway, simply because they want people to start to forget the previous versions before they launch the new ones. I think the only exception to this has been with the Spider-Man reboot, but Spider-Man is also Marvel's most profitable character, so it makes sense they'd be willing to just do a quick reboot. Hell, they didn't even bother with the origin story we all know anyway in Homecoming, something I was thankful for. None of us needs to see Uncle Ben or Batman's parents die ever again. We know the back story.
"Sources tell Variety that the deal for the original four Marvel shows includes a clause that prevents the characters from appearing in any non-Netflix series or film for at least two years after cancellation. That means that “Daredevil,” “Luke Cage,” and “Iron Fist” — which were all canceled this year at Netflix — could not come to the Disney streaming service until 2020 at the earliest."
