Wow. That seems excessive.

What state? Prior record? Were you on probation already and violated the terms of it by stealing? Did you cooperate with police after caught? (I've seen police railroad minor cases by asking prosecutors to drive harder plea bargains just because they felt like the defendant acted like a jerk to the cops)

Did you get a lawyer?

I had drug charges and ended up with a fine and 6 months probation.

Would have been worse if I hadn't gotten a lawyer.
