Mock Draft 23 Commentary!

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I swear, if @AZ_ or @Out of the Rafters at the Q take my guy at the top of 4… I’ve felt pretty lucky so far (outside of the iDL runs), and maybe he’s a reach but…
I thought you were going edge, and you did.

I just didn't expect THAT edge. I was thinking you'd be selecting someone from a bit further up North.

I couldn’t resist Diaby. I think the most exciting thing with him, for me, is a lot of his really good rush tape comes from lining up as a 5 tech, and with his power/speed, with Gannon, he can be shuffled around in rush packages.

He’s not an every down guy, but he’s an every down athlete, and the Cardinals reallllly suffered last year rushing the QB until later in the year when Sanders/Thomas played more.

Wilson/Sanders/Thomas/Diaby is a really young pass rush group, and while I’d have loved to have an iDL I actually like fall to me, it didn’t happen. Maybe next year.

I avoided looking at other people's mock drafts till now, but I'm starved for ideas in the 4th & 5th rounds.

I was surprised to see that both Mel Kiper & Walter Football made the same choice I did for the Cowboys in the first round - Michael Mayer. Either I'm a savvy person or those two are as clueless as I am.

I'm really big on Colby Wooden as a Browns 3 tech pick. He's a former blue chip defensive end who was moved to Perrion Winfrey's role this season for a go-nowhere Auburn squad.

If he picked a different school, he'd be in discussion for the early second round.

Great pick, Hurl. Hope that one comes true.

Young, high ceiling 3 tech. He's like the Jedrick Wills of defensive interior players.
It will be interesting to see if we prioritize the run-stoppers. Historically, we've prioritized the guys who can penetrate.

Dexter is someone who is very good at stopping the run right now. He dominates with heavy hands at the point of attack, but he definitely struggles when it comes to rushing the passer from the interior.

I'm worried that his age (21.5) shoots him up our draft board ahead of much better players who can actually produce a pass rush from the interior, like Kobie Turner--who is nearly 24 years old already.

Assuming no miracles like Benton or Mazi falling to 74, I think Ika, Ojomo, Dexter and Byron Young (Alabama) are all in our sights on the interior.

Personally I'd take Kobie Turner over any of them.

I'd also probably take Jerrod Clark over any of them as the run-stopping nose-2i player.

On day three if you're looking for Berry to break the age guardrail, keep an eye on Jalen Redmond.

Also, calling this shot now--if the Browns trade up on day 2 with Tuli still on the board, he's going to be the pick.

I really like Jerrod Clark as a project, but he is rough around the edges. I've seen a lot of film of him losing his balance and I'm not sure that he has the knee bend to improve his balance issues. That said, he is going to push the pile against the run and bat down a ton of passes if he gets on the field. I'd take him as a backup nose from the fifth round on as well.

Kobie Turner is a very, very late bloomer. I do wonder about the Nate Orchard effect with these super seniors. He does get much better knee leverage than Clark, it's like night and day.

Outside of Carter/Mazi/Benton, there isn't a run-stuffing guy in the middle who isn't without his flaws.

I think Jerrod Clark is a bit more polished and reliable than Brodric Martin, another project I like to play anywhere from nose to 2.

Neither of these guys is going to go before day 3, and they aren't going to supplant Dalvin Tomlinson in 2023--but I like their ability to grow into someone who can play on the inside, take on double-teams, and win in the run game.

The only other guy I can say that about is Ika--and he's projected to go waaaaaay ahead of them. I'm expecting him to be off the board by 74--and if he's still there, I'm fairly confident he won't be my BPA.

I think Ojomo, Gervon and Byron Young are all sort of going to be run-stopping 3-techs. I'm just not sure there's a place in our defensive scheme for that sort of player. I'd think that teams who run odd fronts like Pittsburgh or the Chargers would be more interested in them.

We'll see. I might be very wrong on how Schwartz's scheme plays out, or in how Berry wants to draft.

As long as we don't take Zacch Pickens, I think I'll be fine with the selection.

You're absolutely right about Turner being a late bloomer. There were questions of if he was even going to play football (he's an orchestra conductor--no, not kidding). However, I want a smart, high-character guy who I know will be a rotational piece for a long time. I loved Thomas Booker last year, and I love Kobie Turner this year. If you get a guy like that in the building, I think that your odds of the troubled, talented young guy like Perrion Winfrey working out increase by a lot.

So do I look smart or stupid for taking Iosivas from Princeton.? lol

I bet he goes in either round four or five in the real draft. I like a receiver or two that are still on the board. It's really how much you like his raw ability and obviously he is teachable.

He's probably better to go to a team with a veteran he can be around and learn from, but on day three, his upside, in my mind, is too much to pass up especially since I have 5 more picks in the draft at the moment lol
