Microsoft expands Xbox 360 warranty for red ring sufferers

Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse, Microsoft stands up and takes some responsibility for what appears to be an epidemic amongst Xbox 360 owners: the dreaded Red Ring of Death! Announced today in both press release and open letter formats, Microsoft has pledged to extend the warranties to three years from date of purchase for those who suffer from RROD, and will reimburse those who already paid to have it fixed. Seeing as how the 360 hasn't even been out for two years, that means everyone is covered. This is after they already extended the warranty from a puny 90 days to the more reasonable one year warranty that consoles are still covered under, unless they specifically suffer from the Red Ring of Death (marked by three blinking red lights).

Xbox exec Peter Moore also published an open letter to the "Xbox Community" addressing hardware failure and promising "policy changes intended to keep you in the game, worry-free." Whether or not these policy changes include actually fixing the underlying hardware issue or just improving the support after the fact is unclear, but Moore finishes saying, "If we have let any of you down in the experience you have had with your Xbox 360, we sincerely apologize. We are taking responsibility and are making these changes to ensure that every Xbox 360 owner continues to have a great experience." Classy show, Microsoft. Real classy. Let's hope this move is coupled with hardware revisions to keep your customers -- and shareholders -- happy.

This and the rumor that the P$3 may get a 100 dollar price cut is great gaming news. I can't wait for all of the surprises that will be unveiled next week at E3!

i find it hilarious that Microsoft has lost $1 Billion over the repairs and everything on the 360.

Classy move by Microsoft? They were losing money, people were going and getting Wii's or PS3's. Dont confuse bidness with some sort of non-existant "class."

They reaped what they sowed.

They tried to rush their system to be the first of the next gen consoles out there and it is killing them with repair costs.

The system really is a piece of crap as far as mechanics go, there are so many bugs and errors in the system.

I really hope PS3 drops the price, because right now, Nintendo is smashing both the Xbox and the PS3 into the ground at this point in time.

I cant afford the PS3, I know a lot of others are like that too....$600 for a system is just unheard of it. Til they drop the price and get a lot more games on the market, Sony will be hanging way behind in third place.

Actually the Wii is not smashing either...They can't get the thing in stock...It would be though.

Yes it is...as of last week I believe the Xbox is at #1 with a little over 10 million in sales, that's almost two years in the game.

The Wii at seven months is at 8 million.

The PS3 is way back there at 4 million.

The wii lacks online gameplay and multiplayer online support.
At least PS is slowly getting the online system better and better.

So far the only thing we can do is send a msg or send a mii and that gets old.

But maybe next week Nintendo will make a nice lil anouncement at e3.
