NBA reducing US staff by 9 percent due to economy
47 minutes ago

Buzz Up PrintLONDON (AP)—The NBA is eliminating about 80 jobs in the United States, the first major American sports league to announce layoffs because of the worldwide economic turmoil.

Commissioner David Stern told The Associated Press last month the league would cut staff in anticipation of the downturn. He said Sunday the figure would be about 9 percent of the American work force, and the league confirmed the number of jobs the next day.

“We made the decision some months ago that the economy was going to be a bit wobbly so we began a belt-tightening,” Stern said in London, where the New Jersey Nets beat the Miami Heat in a preseason game.

The NBA continues to hire in other countries, he said, as it seeks to grow internationally.

Stern emphasized that the league is still hitting its business targets.

“My guess is that by the time we tip off in a week or so, we will be down modestly in season tickets. … We think we’ll be up in revenue, but I just can’t say for sure whether we’ll be up or down in attendance because it’s just so touch-and-go, because sports tickets are very much disposable income,” he said. “So, we’re not going to see a huge impact, but I dare say we will see some impact.”

This really is not good news and is not a good sign.

Yet, they want to build arenas in China and Europe.

Hey Stern, let's make sure everything is okay with the system as it is before you start making grandiose ideas about making the NBA a completely global league.

I'm totally going to love the idea of the Cavs traveling to Europe one night to play a game that is 6 hours ahead of my time, only to be traveling back immediately after for a home game the next day.

That won't happen, if they expand to the European leagues then teams will take week+ long trips to these areas, where they will get moderate rest(A day or two) for the flight there and flights back. This also qualifies for when the European teams come here to play, it won't be for one night but for long stints.

I personally cannot wait till they expand.

The NBA can't even turn it's joke of a sister league the WNBA into a profitable business. 10 years the WBNA has ran in the red, and yet it still continues. You really think the NBA can support becoming an international league? I can see a lot of irate people because they can't watch the games at a normal time.

I could see a Euro league where it is an NBA Euro and they have their own champion. After both champions are crowned they the NBA America champ plays the NBA Euro champ and we get a NBA World champ. However it would take a long time to get Euro up to American standards.

Did anyone else get an e-mail from Glen yesterday letting them know that RCF would have to "make some adjustments" in the near future and to expect a call on Friday on whether or not RCF would be able to retain you as an employee?
