NEW YORK(AP) Some of the NBA's biggest stars say the new game ball is too sticky when dry, too slippery when wet, and too _ well, not the old one.

The league is convinced it's better, no matter what the likes of Shaquille O'Neal, Dwyane Wade or Steve Nash have to say about it.

"Sure, you hear some comments that aren't as positive as the overwhelming majority of people that we tested the ball with," Stu Jackson, executive vice president of basketball operations, said Tuesday. "That's going to happen. Everyone that handles the ball loves the grip and the feel of the ball."

Not Shaq, who said the ball "feels like one of those cheap balls that you buy at the toy store, indoor-outdoor balls."

The NBA's old leather balls are being replaced this season by a microfiber composite model, the league's first change in 35 years. O'Neal blasted the ball Monday, criticizing not only the product, but whoever was involved in the decision to use it.

Both O'Neal and Wade griped about the ball's slick grip when wet, and two-time reigning MVP Steve Nash said the ball has a tacky feel that makes shooting and certain types of passes tricky.

"I certainly won't have to lick my fingers. The ball sticks to your hand. It's a big transition. It's extremely sticky," Nash said Tuesday in a conference call from the Phoenix Suns' training camp in Italy.

The ball looks noticeably different, too: Manufactured by Spalding, it features only two interlocking panels _ sort of like a pair of hands with the fingers laced together _ rather than the eight panels found on traditional basketballs.

Nash said it will be a difficult transition, but sounded as though he expected players to figure out how to use it.

"We do have a month to get it going," he said. "Right now I would say that the basketball sticks to the floor, it sticks to the backboard. It is different."

Jackson said no matter what the players say, the new ball's grip is an improvement, even when wet.

"If you moisturize a leather ball, it also feels very slick," he said. "But this new ball has a better grip when it's wet than a leather ball."

Players have already had plenty of exposure to the new ball, which was sent to all teams after the All-Star break and to players during the summer.

Most players were probably exposed to it even before that. The ball was used in events at the last two All-Star games, which O'Neal played in, and was tested in summer league and D-League play. It is also used at the amateur levels, so most players grow up using it.

"It's a better ball," Jackson said. "But as a product matter, composite balls are used in every league throughout the world. And they've been used in every level of play over the last 10 years domestically in the NCAA and also in high school."

Jackson said O'Neal would not be fined for his outburst, in which he said that the person who decided to change the ball "needs his college degree revoked." But he did say that the change would not have been made if there were many similar complaints when the ball was tested.

"We would have pulled the ball," Jackson said.

Of seven Heat players interviewed about the new ball at the team's media day Monday and after practice Tuesday, not one preferred it to the old leather model. Certainly not Shaq, who took a spinning jump hook in the lane during practice, about six feet from the basket. But the ball slipped in his hand and went straight up in the air _ without moving toward the hoop at all.

It was one of three times Shaq lost the handle in a span of about 15 minutes.

"I'm right with him," Heat coach Pat Riley said. "I think it's horrible. ... It really does feel like an indoor-outdoor ball. We'll see how it works. Maybe they'll learn to love it, I don't know."

Why the freaking change?

I have been wondering the same thing. No clue why they would change a good thing. I don't think its marketing or anything like that, since most people get new basketballs every so often anyway, they aren't going to suddenly sell a bunch of them.

But hey, if it makes the Heat worse that can't be that bad. And Shaq shouldn't complain, with a hand his size he shouldn't lose grip on anything, his free throw shooting cant get worse.

Who the hell is Stu Jackson and why should his opinion about the feel of a ball matter to anyone?

It's down to the players. This is an idiotic decision.

NEW YORK, June 28, 2006 – The NBA is introducing a new Official Game Ball for play beginning in the 2006-07 season. The new ball, manufactured by Spalding, features a new design and a new material that together offer better grip, feel, and consistency than the current leather ball. This marks the first change to the ball in over 35 years and only the second in 60 seasons. In 1970, the ball was transitioned from a four panel to an eight panel ball. NBA Commissioner David Stern, Spalding Group Vice President Dan Touhey, NBA Sr. Vice President of Basketball Operations Stu Jackson, Boston Celtics’ Forward Paul Pierce, and NBA on TNT analyst and two-time NBA champion Kenny Smith unveiled the new Game Ball today at the NBA Store on Fifth Avenue prior to the 2006 NBA Draft.
The new ball features Spalding’s Cross Traxxion™ technology, a union of revolutionary design and breakthrough material. The design is comprised of two interlocking, cross-shaped panels rather than the eight oblong panels found on traditional basketballs. As a result, there is more material coverage. The material is a microfiber composite with moisture management that provides superior grip and feel throughout the course of a game. Additionally, the new composite material eliminates the need for a break-in period, which is necessary for the current leather ball, and achieves consistency from ball to ball.

The interlocking cross-panel design has one-third the channel area of the previous official ball to provide more material coverage and better grip.

"The advancements that Spalding has made to the new game ball ensure that the best basketball players in the world will be playing with the best basketball in the world," said Stern.

The NBA and Spalding subjected the ball to a rigorous evaluation process that included laboratory and on-court testing. Every NBA team received the new ball and had the opportunity to use it in practice. The ball also was tested in the NBA Development League and was used in activities during NBA All-Star 2006 in Houston. NBA retired players Steve Kerr and Mark Jackson participated in testing the new ball as well.

“Spalding’s continual efforts to advance basketball technology have yielded the optimal ball, one that is worthy of the new Official NBA Game Ball designation,” said Spalding Group President and CEO Scott Creelman. “We are honored that the NBA collaborated with us to make this change.”

The ball will be used in all NBA events leading up to next season including summer leagues, preseason and training camps, and NBA Europe Live presented by EA Sports. All active players will receive a personalized ball, as will each player selected in the 2006 NBA Draft.

Fans will have an opportunity to see the new ball tonight during the 2006 NBA Draft televised live on ESPN at 7 p.m. EST. The ball will hit store shelves at major sporting goods outlets on October 31 coinciding with the tip-off of the 2006-07 season. A limited number of new balls will be available today at the world’s only NBA Store on Fifth Avenue in New York City. Fans can also pre-order their new ball online at NBAStore.com for delivery at the start of the 2006-07 season.

As the Official Game Ball supplier of the NBA since 1983, Spalding will continue to produce the only basketball used during all NBA practices, exhibitions, games and international competitions. Spalding maintains the exclusive rights to produce and sell a complete line of NBA and team-identified basketballs in all sizes including full, junior, youth and mini.

if this link works here is the ball.

It looks like a peice of crap, cheap, terrible ball...and thats just from the looks.

From what I've been told(haven't held one) it does "stick" more than the other ball. While "moisture management" and superior grip may be improved it will cause some serious problems for players that use the glass. I've been told that the ball banks in different now off the glass because it sticks. I think ballhandlers will be able to adjust to it quickly. The Tim Duncan's of the league are going to have to make an adjustment and learn how the ball banks differently.
This was a terrible decision. Moisture and grip have NEVER been a complaint in the NBA. I'm guessing Emperor Stern thinks everyone is going to rush out and by the cool new ball and the league will make more money...can't think of any other reason they'd make such a stupid change.

FIGURES THAT THE HEAT WILL NEED A EXCUSE ONCE THEY GET THERE ASSES WHOOPED THIS SEASON.

That ball looks like *$#^. The old ball was perfect this looks like a terrible, cheap, immitation. Horrible move on the NBA's part as it looks now.

Really I am not too concerned with how it looks as much as how it will effect the worlds greatest shooter Damon Jones.

This may make a good pool question, which NBA player is going to be the 1st to blame the new ball for a poor performance?

Allen Iverson

So if the Cavs win a championship, everybody will say LeBron couldn't win a championship using the same old style ball that Jordan and D-Wade used..

or

maybe they won't...

They'll call it the sweat ball era and complain that with this new moisture wicking ball- Jordan would have scored triple the points that LeBron will.

By "channel area" don't they mean the black strip area? That doesn't look like that much less. Before I saw the picture I thought of all the shooters that use the black lines to shoot symmetrically every time, how bad it would be if the lines were gone. But it looks OK.

If it's really stickier, you know it'll alter the difference between "friendly" hoops and "unforgiving" ones. You know, the double-thick rims at the park are what I mean by "unforgiving." It should be a little friendlier when they draw back iron.

I think they'll get used to it.

I used one of these last week..My buddy got one in Vegas when team USA was there for their workouts...It's got the same feel as the new footballs that are out at Champs.. It actually makes the ball feel smaller.. Most of them are 29:5 and the ladies play with a 28:5... With the feel, it makes the ball feel smaller like a 28:5..

A midget could literally palm the ball.. It's got tremendous grip..
