The Punisher seems like a perfect fit for a Netflix show, honestly. It can be as dark and violent as it wants without having to worry about an R rating impacting ticket sales in the theater. I'd love for them to base it on Marvel's MAX Punisher comics from about a decade ago. Those were great.
Jessica Jones is also based on one of those Marvel Max Comics called "Alias." Jessica is a former costumed hero that was never particularly good at it. So, she opens up Alias Investigations where she specializes in "super powered" cases. She's a self destructive, potty mouthed, chain smoking alcoholic with an inferiority complex.
This story had been rumored for a TV series for a number of years before Netflix picked it up. I am so glad that regular television never gave it the go ahead. That sanitized version they would have made would never have gotten the right feel. It wouldn't have done it justice. Just like none of the movies have really done Punisher justice. Jack, I completely agree, Garth Ennis's Punisher Max would make a great Netflix series.
I'll be interested to see what type of pruning they do considering how many heroes from Marvel appear in the series. Luke Cage and Matt Murdock will clearly be in it, as they are both in the book and attached to Netflix in a series. But, which of the others is uncertain. Captain America, Carol Danvers, Jessica Drew, Mattie Franklin, Rick Jones, Jarvis, J Jonah Jameson, Ant-Man (Scottie Lang), Madame Web, Speedball, Peter Parker, Flash Thompson, Jean Grey, and Thor are some of the characters that appear in the book. There is also an appearance by the Avengers of some importance to the plot (not counting the flashbacks to her "hero days"). Most of the villains are D Leaguers, except the Purple Man and Scorpion. We already know that the Purple Man will appear as David Tenant is already attached to the role. Something I am definitely looking forward to seeing.
Anyways, some of those characters were important to the story plots, some were not. But, clearly not all of them can be included. There are just too many characters. I'll be interested to see which characters are dropped, or simply switched out for other characters. I am really looking forward to this series. I loved the Alias comic that it is being based on.
