True Detective back this Sunday. Reviews of the the first 3 episodes have been "meh"
Also the Brink and Ballers look like junk.
HBO is in a weird place, imo. Obviously Game of Thrones is awesome. But that is on the downside of its existence.
They don't have a ton right now. Especially from a drama perspective. The Leftovers was interesting but wasn't exactly awe-inspiring. The Wire creators are supposedly making a show about the development of the porn industry. That's going to be a tough sell for a larger audience. HBO better hope Westworld is something special.
On a different note, the Netflix show Sense8 was really intriguing. A first season of a show with that many characters in different settings is difficult but I thought it had a lot of potential at different moments.
It is a type of show that could really become epic in future seasons if they can pull it all together.
"True Detective" was always going to live up to people's expectations after that first season came out of nowhere and was awesome. I have a feeling it will still be better than most stuff on TV though.
"Brink" and "Ballers" definitely look awful. Half of me wants to give "Ballers" a shot because I love the Rock, but I doubt I actually will.
I think that HBO is just in a little bit of an in-between stage as they look to find their next big hit. "Luck" was an intriguing show but the animal cruelty stuff killed it. "Treme" was a critical success but a commercial flop. "True Blood," "Boardwalk Empire," and "The Newsroom" all had their problems (although I though BE and Newsroom were both really solid).
"Leftovers" is a really good show, but I don't think it catches on with the masses because they feel burned by Lindelof. "TD" was a massive success, but these lukewarm reviews might kill its chance to build on that momentum. You're probably right that "Westworld" has about as good of a shot as "GoT" to be a breakout hit for them. And as far as Simon's new show goes, I'll certainly be watching it but I doubt it becomes commercial success.
And don't forget about comedies, as I'm a big fan of "Veep," "Silicon Valley," and "Girls."
That all being said though, I still watch most of HBO's shit, and pretty much always give their new stuff a shot. They've earned that.
