I had the pleasure of attending the Herbstreit Challenge at Fawcett Stadium on September 1, and got to see several D-1 prospects strut their stuff.

A recap:

Game 1:
Buford (GA) Wolves 34, Grove City (OH) Greyhounds 7

The Buford Wolves dominated this game from the start. The reason the Greyhounds actually scored was only because the Wolves had in their 2nd and 3rd stringers in the 4th. With 2 minutes to play, the Wolves played a soft zone allowing the Dawgs to move the ball. But, the only reason they actually had a chance was because Grove City's coach used his timeouts to stop the clock and they finally scored with about 37 seconds to play.

Grove City could not stop the Buford defensive front 7 as they spent most of the afternoon in the Greyhounds backfield. They were led by Omar Hunter (Notre Dame), a 6'2" 300lb DT who runs the 40 in 4.9 . He was in the backfield all day, disrupting play after play. His teammate, linebacker JT Pridemore (Georgia Tech), was outstanding, as well, cleaning up anything that managed to escape the talented lineman.

Long Beach Poly (CA) Jackrabbits 21, Cle. Glenville (OH) Tarblooders 13

This game had loads of D-1 talent on both sides. Long Beach Poly is the largest high school in the country, and it shows. They fielded a team whose O-line easily averaged 3 bills. But, Glenville was not impressed, and had the 'Rabbits on their heals most of the game, outgaining them 346 to 184 yards. The problem for the Tarblooders is their coaching staff. They could have easily dominated this game, but I only counted 3 different plays that they actually ran. They ran them from 3 different sets, but they were the same 3 plays: a belly run, into the heart of a fast D, averaging just 3.4 ypc; a quick out to a WR in the flat - which was very effective, but only netted about 3 to 4 yds per catch; and finally, a quick slant that they only ran 3 times, which gained them the most yards, including a potential game winning play. I say potential, because the play was executed to perfection, except for the part of actually catching the ball.

For Glenville, they have new starting QB in the form of Terrence Owens, a 6-1, 141 lb junior with a very good, accurate arm. He did a great job of reading the defense and taking what was given to him (both by the D, and by the coaching staff). The usual star for the 'Blooders is senior WR Cordale Scott (Ohio State), a 6-3, 200lb specimen who runs a 4.5 40. But, he was held to 4 catches for 25 yards, and had the crucial drop on a 4th and 10 from the 11 yd line of the Jackrabbits with less than 2 minutes to play...a perfect pass that hit him square in the numbers. I can see why some colleges want to switch him to defense. The Tarblooders also have a couple of outstanding O-linemen in Marcus Hall and Shawntel Rowell. Hall (only school of interest so far is Ohio State) is a 6-5 294 lb junior man-beast. Rowell (offer from Illinois)is a 6-2 350lb anchor. They were able to keep the Long Beach D at bay most of the day, allowing Owens time to read the D. They were mostly hampered by the playcalling.

The defense also did a great job stopping LBP junior QB Morgan Fennel, a 6-1 190lber with a cannon arm. We're talking 55 yards in the air cannon. His problem is that he can't hit the broadside of a barn. His accuracy was terrible, at best, only able to complete throws of about 12 yards, max, with any accuracy.

LBP is lead by their O-line. D-1 prospects, Jordan Gross (6-3, 310, with Arizona and Colorado courting him, among others), Marcus Falani (6-3, 315), and Doug Spacht (6-4, 285, courted by Nebraska) are the anchors. They kept Glenville's talented front 4 at bay, giving Fennel plenty of time to overthrow his receivers by 10 yards.

Still to Come:

Monroeville Gateway (PA) Gators 6, Youngstown Mooney (OH) Cardinals 27

Tulsa Union (OK) Redskins 31, Canton McKinley (OH) Bulldogs 0

Good stuff.

OSU is recruiting Scott as an athlete who they could play anywhere, maybe defense if his hands are bad (although i haven't heard that they are). Like most of Ginn's Buckeyes, he's a silent verbal and won't come out of the closet till late january. Reported the Buckeyes had interest in Rowell as a DT, and were anxious to see if he could keep his weight in check (apparently a constant battle). Interest has cooled, as he hasn't kept his weight in check, and isn't playing defense his senior year. OSU's OL recruits are all world for 2008, and Rowell has no chance at being a buckeye at that position.
