Oden

Re: Oden (Cavs expected to offer contract after trade deadline)

I think if you can keep some common sense rules, we could get something out of him. No back to backs. Maximum of 2 games per week. Primarily only have him travel on the east coast. Shoot for about 30-35 home games and 15-20 road games and a total of 1000 minutes, max. If he can get there, then open it up. Much like what they did with Z but even more extreme.

Re: Oden (Cavs expected to offer contract after trade deadline)

Does anyone know what the total dollars will be if we offer Oden a deal?

I don't think anybody here would know unless they were involved intricately in the Cavs' front office.

Speculation is that teams are pulling out of the Oden sweepstakes because it will take more than a vet minimum to get him. I'd guess the Cavs offer him 2 mill for the remainder of this season, 4 mill next year, and a team option for 4 mill or even a bit higher the third year. It's little more than a hunch. The fact that the Cavs don't want to make an offer before the trade deadline leads me to believe they will use a good chunk of their remaining cap space on him.

Sounds reasonable, but I have a question. IF we move beyond the trade deadline and the Cavs still have gobs of cap space (way, ie, 4 mil), and say Cavs are hoarding Cap Space for future, INSTEAD of the pay format you suggest, why wouldnt the Cavs "front load" the deal --- ie, instead of 2 mil this season, followed by 4 mil and 4 mil (team option), why not load up the contract for the remainder of this season, ie 4 mil for the rest of this season, followed by 2 mil and 4 mil (team option). Or even a higher number THIS year (if there is cap space), lessening future payments. The overall commitmet to the player woul be the same, but the impact on next years cap would be less.

In NFL, for cap purposes, they prorate over the life of the contract. Not so in the NBA, to my knowledge. So, if you are committing 10 Mil to Oden (assumming the team exercises the option), why not commit the dollars now (2012-2013 season), when there is cap space available, as opposed to committing 4 mil per in future years. Curious as to responses/reasoning.

If Oden even moderately resembles what he once was, getting him would be a HUGE steal.

I really hope we're working the phones to trade Speights...don't want to lose him for nothing.

The way I see it, even if Oden can only play 15-20 minutes a night and make a positive impact he's worth rolling the dice on, especially since he's going to come pretty cheap.

If it doesn't work out, Gilbert's out a few million. Big deal.

This has been discussed several times now. A deal like that is against the new CBA. A front-loaded contract (or "signing bonus") is still counted against the cap, spread evenly amongst the years of the contract.

Re: Oden (Cavs expected to offer contract after trade deadline)

If we get Oden we will have gone from having the worst bench in the league to possibly one of the best with Livingston, Speights and Ellington along with Oden.

Except Oden isn't playing this season

Re: Oden (Cavs expected to offer contract after trade deadline)

Are we expecting the Cavs to sign Oden by next weekend or is there going to be another couple of weeks to wait. I'd prefer we hurry and get it done so we can get him with the medical staff.

I imagine that, if we make him an offer, it will happen soon after the trade deadline. Of course, that doesn't mean he'll accept it immediately.

Well, I'd imagine his rate for this year will be pro rated.. so I'd sign it asap, no point wasting money that you're getting paid to get healthy. Sign that bitch and hit the rehab center/gym. Rock the bench and just be a tease for all of RCF.

The longer he puts off the decision the more his salary for this season is going to reduce due to pro-rating. The problem would be if he decides he's getting shoe horned in a to longer contract that could cost him a ton of $$$ if he's able to make a comeback.
