When Wu-Tang Clan decided to sell a single copy of their latest album, Once Upon a Time in Shaolin, the highest bidder offered a whopping $5 million for the one-of-kind hip hop masterpiece. Bone Thugs-N-Harmony is wisely following suit with a brand spankin’ new album underway for the fan with the deepest pockets.
“…It’s gonna be a classic album. It’s gonna be a double CD,” Krayzie said, member of BTNH. “One CD will be just us with our original Bone sound. That second CD, we’re gonna bring in as many of the guest appearances that we’ve worked with in the past to the new generation.”
The name of the album? “E. 1999/Legends,” in honor of the 20th anniversary of BTNH’s 1999/Eternal album.
The Cleveland rap group’s final LP will include guest appearances from Drake, Wiz Khalifa, Kendrick Lamar, and Mariah Carey. And someone’s already got their eye on the prize to nab the rare hip hop gem — for $1 million dollars!
“The reaction has been great,” Krayzie Bone told HipHopDX exclusively. “We received the first bidder. I ain’t gonna say who it is… This is gonna be like a domino effect and the one bidder came in like very, very interested. I’m just putting that out there. We got a bidder, so all you all bidders better come on and start bidding ‘cause it’s going down.”
The monetary gains of releasing one, ultra-rare copy, especially in a landscape where physical sales are diminishing, are massive. As Forbes says, it’s economics 101 — “The more scarce a product is, the more you can charge for it.”
“For Wu-Tang, there’s only a single copy of the album, so it becomes the pinnacle of valuable to the superfan. There have been reports of bids that go as high as $5 million, and that’s even before the actual auction has begun!” Forbes adds.
Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, peeping Wu-Tang clan’s success, hopes to emerge victorious, as well, with an arm and a leg from a wealthy superfan.
“When I heard about what [Wu-Tang Clan] was doing [...], I just thought it was a brilliant and genius idea,” Krayzie Bone told HipHopDx.
Will these new moves change the future of sales in the industry?
