Ohio State 2013 Season thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Makes sense the defensive backs coach was the problem. But the line backing core wasn't very good either. I think you gotta cut off the head. I don't want Fickel running the defense. There's more to it than just the defensive backs coach.

OSU takes Chris Ash from Arkansas to be co-Defensive Coordinator and Secondary coach...

So Fickell is still DC...very disappointing

Just because Fickell still has the title of co-DC doesn't mean he's going to be calling the plays. I highly doubt Ash would leave Arkansas, where he was making $550,000 per year, without being guaranteed play-calling responsibilities.

He's not going to be calling the plays, calm down Slitty.

Ash has been calling plays throughout almost all of his tenure as DC, it's impossible to think he accepts a job at tOSU without that responsibility.

Furthermore, I'm so off the charts tired of people blaming Fickell for every problem with the defense. Given that tOSU so obviously disagrees with everyone who says that he's to blame, given that Withers was most certainly helped toward a new job.

Ash gave OSU fits for years as Wisconsin's defensive coordinator, he's a pretty innovative young mind and supposedly a tireless worker with an aggressive attitude. He's a perfect fit for what this team was lacking.

Yeah...Ash led Wisconsin to three straight Rose Bowls as DC...he isn't coming here to work for Fickell. This was a fantastic hire. Buckeyes defensive staff got significantly better, IMO, and will probably recruit better to boot. Been a fun 12 hours to be a Buckeye fan.

The only thing I don't like is that his system plays soft zone and DB's lineup 10 yards from the LOS.

Really wanted a less vanilla scheme. Other than that good hire.

Pretty pleased with the hire. Wisconsin always had a good D under him

That's Alabama's base defense.

It's basically the standard throughout all of college football, it's a basic cover 4.

I know. I just happen to hate zone-based schemes :chuckles:, nothing against Ash.

In 2012, Wisconsin led the Big Ten and ranked third in the NCAA with a three-and-out percentage of 41.72, and the Badgers' 5.23 three and outs per game topped the Big Ten and was fourth in the country. The Badgers' defense was 13th in the NCAA in total defense and tied for 19th in the country in scoring defense. Wisconsin also ranked 21st in the nation in third-down conversion defense in addition to being third in the conference in sacks and ranked 21st in the NCAA in rush defense and pass efficiency defense and 23rd in the country in pass defense.

Excited to see what he can do with 4/5 star prospects.

I guess you dont need an SEC DC in order to be successful...right?

OSU hit two homeruns with these hires. These guys are going to improve the team's performance on the field and in recruiting.

This couldn't have gone much better for the Buckeyes.

What are the expectations for the defense next season? More of the same, or should we expect improvement?
