Joe Paterno is a piece of shit. If that GA reported that he saw Paterno's own 10-year-old grandson getting raped in the shower, do you think he would have stopped at letting the AD know? Paterno has a moral obligation that goes way beyond acting like he's middle management in some company that just passes along a work place complaint.

Anyone who goes to the PSU game this weekend is part of the problem. That stadium should be empty until Paterno is gone.

I kind of figured that JoePa was going to retire after getting the wins record. Now I think it is a certainty.

I know that if I knew a guy for 30+ years and he was accused of something like this, my initial reaction would not be guilty until proven innocent. And I can't imagine you would either.

If that's burying your head in the sand, I can't see it's nothing were not all capable of if we were in the same position.

I guess Paterno did all he needed to do from a job requirement a the time. But, he should have done more. A child was raped. More children were raped because the witness, Paterno, Curley, Shultz and Spanier never called the police. This happened in 2002! Many more victims were raped after that fact....I'm positive that there were more that haven't been reported.

If I was Paterno, I would have speed dialed the office of my superiors, reported it, and said let's call the police to either A) clear our associate of 30 years name or B) get him in custody. The #1 priority in that first 24 hours would have been to find that child and find out what happened! Instead, children continued to unecessarily get raped for YEARS. JoePa's responsibility doesn't stop at just saying he reported it. He should have questioned his his superiors and demanded the authorities get called. The witness was pretty clear that when he walked in he heard a slapping sound and sexual moaning from the showers, then he SAW this monster sodomizing what he thought was a 10 year old child. I don't know why the witness called his father and then contacted JoePa first...the witness screwed up too. They are all at fault here. This is one of the most horrific scandals I have ever heard of at any university. There isn't any way to penalize the witness at this point. JoePa and ANYONE involved at the university can be penalized and should be gone - starting today.

As the father of a young boy this disgusts me to no end.

Completely agree, Max. It sickens me to no end that people can actually make excuses. Had I been that grad assistant, that sick old fuck would have "fallen" repeatedly before I called any superior. My first call would have been to the police and the second to my superior. Just because an obligation was satisfied relating to his job (and this includes Joe Pa too), how does that mean your moral obligation has been satisfied?! My guess is that these crooked fucks were more worried about backlash at PSU than that poor kid. And if there's an eye witness, common sense says its probably not the first time it has happened.

This story makes me sick. Every single one of those guys should be gone, Joe Pa included. If your moral compass is fucked up enough that you dont follow back up on these allegations, get the fuck out. Bunch of embarrassments.

There is not a single person in my life that I wouldn't report to the police INSTANTLY if I had solid evidence that he molested a child. I'm not even sure if I'd address it with the person first, might just go straight to the cops. There's literally zero other ways to handle that situation.

You hear about it..you report it...You wait for 48 hours and if hasn't been reported to the cops by your superior, you (a) ask why the hell not (b) immediately go to the cops yourself.

That's it.

The GA is Mike McQueary. He was a QB at Penn State in the mid 90s. Has red hair. Pretty recognizable. Now he's the WR coach.

I don't know how that guy stayed quite for a decade, especially when Jerry Sandusky was still walking around the locker room. Looks to me like his silence was bought with a coaching job. He decided his career was more important than stopping a sexual predator.

Joe Paterno's career at Penn State needs to end before this season does. And everyone else who helped to cover up serial child abuser Jerry Sandusky needs to be fired too. This evening the athletic director and former vice president stepped down. But this disturbing child serial rape case is far from over. It's the Catholic church abuse case meets college football. Before we go any further you need to read the Attorney General's report for yourself. You cannot have any opinion about what needs to happen at Penn State until you read this report. Most media, with the exception of Yahoo's Dan Wetzel who got me to read it, are completely ignoring the details. As a preliminary, it's graphic, grotesque, and will make you sick to your stomach. But you need to read it to see what a real moral issue in college athletics looks like.

All too often NCAA violations are trumped up as true moral failings. Jim Tressel, Bruce Pearl, Butch Davis, you name any fired coach in the past twenty years and what they did all pales in comparison to what Joe Paterno did.

In reality, they aren't moral failings at all, they're just broken NCAA rules. Which many of us, including me, feel like are already immoral anyway.

What Joe Paterno did was a moral failing of the highest order.

Told that his longtime assistant coach was raping a ten-year old boy in the Penn State locker room showers, do you know what Joe Paterno did?

He told his boss.

That's. It.

What did his Penn State bosses do with this report? According to the grand jury report on the child rape in the Penn State locker room, "The records reveal that the 2002 incident was never reported to any officials in contravention of PA law."

That's because 23 Pa. C.S. Section 6311 makes it mandatory to report child sex abuse.

Let me ask you this, if someone told you that a child had been raped at your office, would you tell your boss and let it go? Because that's what Joe Paterno did in 2002. Nine years ago! Do you know how many other kids have been victims since then? Probably dozens. And don't give me any crap about Paterno not knowing. This happened multiple times. The university conducted an investigation about inappropriate shower touching back in 1998. It's a hell of a coincidence that Sandusky stepped down in 1999, don't you think?

Do you know what Penn State's official response was in 2002 when Sandusky was caught raping a kid in the locker room shower?

They took away his keys to the locker room.

Let me repeat that.

They. Took. Away. His. Keys. To. The. Locker. Room.

If you're Joe Paterno, a supposed moral paragon amidst a sordid sea of cheaters, don't you have to call that response into question?

A former coach gets caught raping a kid in your locker room for the second time, and all you do is take away his keys? I'm sorry, that's criminal negligence on Joe Paterno's part too. If I was one of these kids' parents, I would sue Joe Paterno, I would sue the university, I would sue the booster clubs that underwrite Nittany Lion sports, I would sue every living individual and entity who might have ever known about what was going on and done nothing at all. So far Paterno has escaped criminal prosecution, but I'd sure as hell make certain he was deposed in a civil lawsuit.

To hell with college football fans, every person in America ought to be outraged by this.

So let me be clear and succinct, Joe Paterno should never coach another game at Penn State.

Ever.

By the time the Nebraska game rolls around on Saturday, Joe Paterno ought to be out to Happy Valley pasture. Especially when he's releasing crap official statements like these.

Quoth Paterno's lawyer:

"As my grand jury testimony stated, I was informed in 2002 by an assistant coach that he had witnessed an incident in the shower of our locker room facility. It was obvious that the witness was distraught over what he saw, but he at no time related to me the very specific actions contained in the Grand Jury report. Regardless, it was clear that the witness saw something inappropriate involving Mr. Sandusky. As Coach Sandusky was retired from our coaching staff at that time, I referred the matter to university administrators."

Get ready for the lawsuits, Joe. By the time they're over your legacy is likely to be similar to the legacy of Catholic church administrators who looked the other way as kid after kid was raped.

As Dan Wetzel has already argued, Joe Paterno needs to answer real questions, not release flimsy statements. Why was Sandusky distraught that he wouldn't be Paterno's successor? Why did Sandusky suddenly retire a year after allegations that he'd been behaving inappropriately with boys in Penn State showers first arose? Do you really believe that Paterno knew absolutely nothing about what was going on?

Especially since this was a decade ago. Joe may be senile now, but he wasn't senile 13 years ago, back when he could have ended Sandusky's serial raping of children by speaking out. Or at least speaking to authorities. The AG report identifies eight victims.

There are probably eighty. Or more. Many of those victims have come because Joe Paterno, the winningest coach in college football history, kept silent about the most sordid crime in college football history.

This isn't just a sports story. At some point this week the non-sports media are going to dive in and this story is going to explode on the national scene. Much of the good will that Joe Paterno has built up over the past several decades is going to vanish in an instant. The only reason this story isn't leading national news already is because it was released on the weekend. By Monday afternoon, this will be the top sports story in the country.

If I was a Penn State fan, I wouldn't show up for the Nebraska game unless Joe Paterno was gone.

It's the only decent response to the most indecent story in college football history.

Again, if you haven't read the report, you don't need to let anyone in the media make decisions for you, you need to make decisions for yourself. Once you read this report, you'll agree with me, anyone who knew any of the details of these incidents needs to be gone.

Including Joe Paterno.

Right. Now.

Here's something interesting to think about.

Think about how many lives Jerry Sandusky has ruined by being a sick, selfish piece of human garbage. I'd pay money to see a video of him being strangled with his own shoelaces, preferably by someone else.

I hope all these kids come forward and sue PSU and Sandusky hard.

Legally, some of these guys may not be liable, but wait until the civil suits start rolling in. I can't imagine how much money this is going to cost PSU.

Absolutely fucking despicable. Joe Paterno didn't obviously care enough to put a stop to it or see that things were REALLY taken care of. Yeah he went through the protocols and then totally let it fucking slip through the cracks and nothing was done! How can you NOT fault this guy for not doing something? I mean sure he looks and talks like he died 5 years ago and it's all cute the scenile coach that really isn't the coach but a figurehead up in the booth. He's 105 years old...NO! HE WAS A FUCKING BYSTANDER AND KNEW ABOUT THIS SHIT AND DID NOTHING! Hoping it would all just go away...and then it didn't...and time built and he got guiltier and guiltier and knew that if he reported it way late that he'd be in trouble for letting it go on for so long.

Disgusting, Paterno is fucking scum and the whole lot of them are fucking scum. I hope they all get fucking pounded in prison uncontrollably for ruining lives.

Paterno chose his career, his wins record, and his little deity like status in Happy Valley over helping kids lives from being ruined by some sick bastards that are lurking around your program. Horrible, can't even describe how fucking despicable this entire thing is. Jesus christ, it's shit like this that makes me terrified to bring a child into this world. If I'm the parents I'm picking out fucking amusement parks that I want, college education to ANOTHER school. Not Penn Rape University. Good god, all the money in the world won't erase what happened to these poor kids, but they deserve as much of it as they want.

Penn St. scandal should force Paterno out

We worship corporations and institutions. Our Supreme Court granted them First Amendment rights. The Fourth Estate, the alleged watchdogs of democracy, acts as their mouthpiece.



There should be no surprise that protecting Joe Paterno, Penn State, Happy Valley and Linebacker U — profit-generating institutions at the core of big-time college athletics’ amateur myth — appears to have taken precedence over the protection of children.

It’s the era we live in. Institutions are valued more than human beings.

Safeguarding JoePa, marketing and exploiting his march to victory 409, appears to have been more important than exposing allegations against longtime defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky, charged with sexually abusing teenage boys.

Let’s not ignore the timing of the release of the grotesque and shocking grand jury report/indictments, conveniently revealed a week after Paterno surpassed Grambling’s Eddie Robinson on the all-time wins list. A two-year investigation wrapped up just as JoePa placed a bow on his legacy and 11 months after Paterno testified in front of the grand jury examining Sandusky’s alleged two decades of heinous perversion.

Coincidence? Not in my eyes.

No one involved in the tragic handling of the allegations against Sandusky is worthy of sympathy and benefit of doubt without first answering some very direct and serious questions.



WHAT WE'RE ALL ASKING
A former coach has been charged with abusing eight minors. Greg Couch asks: How could school officials let this happen?
Not Paterno. Not Mike McQueary, the graduate assistant-turned-recruiting coordinator who reportedly witnessed Sandusky rape a young boy in the Penn State locker room in 2002. Not Tim Curley and Gary Schultz, the former Penn State administrators accused of covering up the 2002 rape. Not Penn State president Graham Spanier. And not anyone involved in the rug-swept 1998 investigation into allegations of sexually criminal behavior against Sandusky that might have played some role in Sandusky’s abrupt 1999 retirement and self-admitted realization he’d never be Paterno’s successor.

Until questions are answered thoroughly and forthrightly, all of these people, including the people rationalizing Paterno’s weak actions upon hearing about the 2002 incident, are guilty of valuing the JoePa myth more than the reality of the vulnerability and preciousness of human life.

Four hundred and nine victories at what cost?

If there is an ounce of dignity left in Paterno’s vain and delusional 84-year-old body, he will step down from his throne today. His written excuse is preposterous.

“If true, the nature and amount of charges made are very shocking to me and all Penn Staters,” Paterno said in a statement. “While I did what I was supposed to with the one charge brought to my attention, like anyone else involved I can’t help but be deeply saddened these matters are alleged to have occurred. . . . If this is true, we were fooled, along with scores of professionals trained in such things, and we grieve for the victims and their families. They are in our prayers.

“As my grand jury testimony stated, I was informed in 2002 by an assistant coach that he had witnessed an incident in the shower of our locker room facility. It was obvious that the witness was distraught over what he saw, but he at no time related to me the very specific actions contained in the Grand Jury report. Regardless, it was clear that the witness saw something inappropriate involving Mr. Sandusky. As Coach Sandusky was retired from our coaching staff at that time, I referred the matter to university administrators.”


At age 75, Paterno sought plausible deniability from the allegations of criminal behavior inside the Penn State locker room of his 30-year employee. Rather than immediately demand that Sandusky appear and explain himself, the world-famous molder of men passed the responsibility along to the athletic director, who has far less real power than Paterno. Paterno could have done a helluva lot more. Rather than call the police, Paterno seemingly gathered as little information as possible and slipped back into his JoePa facade.

Witnessing this cowardice and hypocrisy, it appears, made Mike McQueary want to be a Joe Paterno assistant coach for the next decade. I don’t understand McQueary, a former Penn State quarterback, at all. He allegedly saw a naked old man raping a naked young boy, and McQueary ran out of the locker room. He took no action to protect the boy? McQueary is at least 30 years younger than Sandusky. Coaching is supposed to be about helping young people develop.

But money and fame have perverted the profession. It’s now an occupation to pleasure vanity. Joe Paterno should’ve retired 20 years ago. His ego wouldn’t allow it. Dean Smith, the far more self-aware basketball version of Paterno, retired at age 66. But coach Smith owned the Division I record for victories when he retired. North Carolina didn’t need to prop him up for a decade so he could surpass Adolph Rupp.

There should be an asterisk next to JoePa’s 409 victories. And if not an asterisk, at least a dollar sign, America’s favorite religious symbol, our justification for valuing institutions more than human beings.

Oh how I wish I didn't delete a message from a PSU fan telling me that I should follow a program with more integrity and such after the Tressel business.
