I spent my undergrad in High Point, North Carolina which was about an hour outside of Charlotte. I currently reside in the DC metro area for graduate school. I guess it depends what you are looking for. Between those two I can tell you that DC definitely has a lot more going on. I can also say that Charlotte is significantly cheaper. I really love North Carolina and ultimately want to end up back in the state.
Now, for living on your own, Charlotte is easier in the sense that it is really slow and quiet. I don't mean either of those in a bad way. In fact, I really appreciated the pace and kindness of people from the area and made two brothers for life in NC, both of whom were born in Charlotte. With that said, the DC metro system makes traveling significantly easier. It is also easier to socialize only because of the vast bar seen. If you want to know more about either of the two places PM me and I'll do my best to help out. Also, if you end up in DC this summer, let me know and we can meet up.
