Since I am currently unemployed, I am thinking about spending some of my off time learning a new language. I want to get into sales (specifically engineering or medical devices). For engineering, I think learning German would be particularly beneficial. i use to work in switzerland off and on so I know some.

Anyways, has anyone used ROsetta Stone before? And if so, would you recommend it or would you just take a coarse at a college. Thanks

I know you can order chicken in French in a restaurant if you use it.

I would like to learn German as well. I'd like to learn the language of my Caucasian side other than Spanish.

Learn Arabic. The US Gov't will hire you tomorrow.

I want to learn Japanese just because I think it's pure laziness to go to another country and not try to communicate with them.

But Rosetta Stone is very pricey, I'm talking a good $500. I believe it comes in volumes, and I believe each language has a 3 volume set. And I believe $500 is for all of them.

I am actually planning on using it over this summer to learn Italian for when I study in Europe next fall. I recommend going to their website and trying their demo. I think it is for the turkish language, but i found it very compelling. My friend is a language major and he explained that the way in which he learns his language is by associating the foreign word with the object it stands for without going through English first. The Rosetta Stone software causes an individual who wouldn't normally think in that fashion (such as myself) to think that way. (this is in contrast to most language courses which have you memorize words by pairing them with the equivalent English words
Try the demo, and see if you like it and if it helps. I tried the demo months ago, but i still remember the turkish words I learned through just the short demo. because i retained the demo so well, i plan on buying the Italian or maybe the German Software when summer rolls around. http://www.rosettastone.com/personal/demo/
If you do buy German, tell me if you like it or not. I'm curious.

If you want to learn German listen to the Dance metal band Rammstein...

I learned to count to 10 with them while singing about the sun burning people alive!

Wohoo!

I also recommend Robstein (or something along those lines). They are a german metal band my roomate listens to on occasion. :chuckles:

Oh, actually I bet its the same band and i was just saying the name wrong all this time. Feeling very sheepish right now lol

I love that stupid song. It makes me want to do a Nazi march around my house. (And I'm half-Jewish!)

Does anyone know how to snap their fingers twice and then say in French, "Garcon, I just sharted my pants from the chicken and rice you fed me here at your restaurant and I need to use a bathroom. I also need you to purchase a new pair of pants for me at the department store next door. Otherwise, you're not getting a tip."

Agreed on all counts. Rammstein makes me want to throw one half of myself into an oven (I'm half jew as well so I should be able to get away with that bullshit joke).

From one half-jew to another, may I say Shalom.

Anyways, i picked up Spanish levels 1-3 and German level 1. I'm gonna take it pretty seriously, prolly about 2 hours/day on it

Damn. I knew Rammstein and the Nazis would get a mention this thread. :chuckles:
