Cubs prospect Jeff Samardzija, a record-breaking receiver at Notre Dame, is giving up football for baseball, FOXSports.com has learned.

Samardzija, a right-handed pitcher, was the Cubs' fifth-round pick last summer and projected as a first-round pick in the NFL draft.
He signed a $7.25 million contract with the Cubs and went 1-2 with a 2.70 ERA in seven starts at Class A last summer before returning to Notre Dame for his senior football season.

Baseball careers can be more benefitial than football. So in that sense, if he happens to be good enough to make it he made a good choice.

Although pitchers are the most frequently injured players in baseball the chances of getting hurt hurling 90 mph fastballs as opposed to coming over the middle and facing 250 lb LB's is much safer..

Its all about guaranteed money.

^thats true too. nfl contracts suck.

seems to me he is scared to join the NFL. He looks like a girl, I guess he now acts like one.

How do you figure? That is just plain stupid to say.

Baseball careers, on average, last longer than football careers. The money is also guaranteed, where as in the NFL the money is not guaranteed.

Why would he, or anybody for that matter, pass that up?

love for the game. plus he looks like a chick.

Na I think he made the right choice, But he had the chance to be an elite player, I dont see him doin that in baseball.
