Just heard on STO, they had Manny Acta on and he said that Sandy is going to be a 1st base coach.

Happy to hear a great former Indian is coming back, even if it is just as a first base coach.

Re: Sandy Alomar join Clevelands staff

Terrific. Now my uncle will have the opportunity to break out his favorite spoonerism, "Andy Salomar" for no reason every time he comes up on screen.

Re: Sandy Alomar join Clevelands staff

There's hope for this team. Very good news to hear.

Always good to see Indians greats return home!

The Plain Dealer

Sandy Alomar Jr. is joining the Indians as first base coach. CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Sandy Alomar Jr. is coming home.

Alomar, 43, was named manager Manny Acta's first base coach today. The former All-Star will also instruct Indians catchers. With Class AA Eastern League MVP Carlos Santana knocking on the door to the big leagues, what better tutor for him than Alomar?

Last week at the general managers meeting in Chicago, Mets GM Omar Minaya said Alomar was staying in New York. He hadn't been officially named to the Mets big-league staff, but Minaya made it clear he was going to keep him.

Something changed between last week and today.

Alomar was a intregal part to the Indians rebirth. Obtained from San Diego with Carlos Baerga and Chris James for Joe Carter after the 1989 season, Alomar won the AL Rookie of the Year in 1990. He also won a Gold Glove.

He played 11 years with the Indians (1990-2000), going to six All-Star games and helping win five division titles and two pennants. The Indians inducted Alomar into their Hall of Fame last season at Progressive Field.

Acta's staff is almost complete. All he needs is a hitting coach. He'll interview Jon Nunnally and Dave Hudgens for the job in Venezuela. Hudgens is managing Caracas and Nunnally is his hitting coach.

Re: Sandy Alomar join Clevelands staff

Nice. Sandy was a very smart player. Trying to bring in former Indians to get the winning back in town. Next on the list, Omar Vizquel to teach Peralta how to field a ball.

Re: Sandy Alomar join Clevelands staff

Man, this really brings back some memories. I may have been in elementary school at the time, but those mid-to-late 90s Indians teams were awesome.

Re: Sandy Alomar join Clevelands staff

The Mets insisted he was not going anywhere and he was THEIR coach. :chuckles:

I'll bet Acta pretty much got on his knees in a private meeting with Sandy. If so, it was damn worth it. This is special stuff. Alomar will sell tickets just because some fans will want to get his John Doe. He probably is about the best coach we could have obtained for the young talent we have. IE: Santana, Valbuena, Cabrera

All the sudden March can't get here fast enough.

Re: Sandy Alomar join Clevelands staff

Amazing what the hiring of a fucking 1B coach can do for morale. :chuckles: I like it though. I like it a lot.

If the local negative nancy likes it then it must be good...:chuckles:

Re: Sandy Alomar join Clevelands staff

When watching ANY baseball game on TV, which coaching position including the manager is the most viewed/shown/watched/seen much more than any other??

Yep.

1st Base Coach

World Series, here we come!

Re: Sandy Alomar join Clevelands staff

Eh. Hopefully he has learned from his dad and can be a decent bigleague coach. He brings name recognition though. Maybe the Tribe will sell another 3-4 season tickets because of this.

This kind of means no Torey Lovullo on the bigleague staff. Wonder what he will do, if he looks for a bigleague coaching gig or just goes back to Columbus. Hopefully he stays in the org.
