Santana to start for the Tribe?

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Either way, we should give them each a fair shot. Both are young, and seem to have the "tools" that transcend to the next level.

But in terms of how they "translate"- Santana has much more upside.

Granted- potential is the most overused and dangerous word in all of sports.

Ohh I don't think anyone would be foolish enough to suggest that. Hell, Santana projects to be one of the better C's this decade. Consider Marson the anti-Shoppach: No HR's, all singles/doubles.

Which isn't horrible, unless you have a crap ton of offense on your team I really can't stand a "great hitting" catcher. How many years could be saved if they didn't catch....

First off wasn't one of the catchers who played at the end of the season last year a stud in AAA. I remember reading that this catcher had around the highest batting averages.

Anywho, if Santana doesn't pan out man will the Tribe be hurting.

How much longer is Vic in contract with boston?

Nah, Santana will start at AAA. He is coming off of surgery (there is usually a drop in performance when guys first return), he hasn't been to the AAA level yet, and since he just switched to C a few years ago he can use a little more seasoning behind the plate in the minors. Noithing wrong with this.

And as for Marson, when you have an offensive C you also have to have a viable backup- and that will be Marson's future with the club. If he does well, he also serves as some enticing trade bait. Even if Santana rakes in spring training, it won't hurt him or the Tribe to have him spend at least a month or two in Columbus before coming north.

He's never caught a game in AAA before.

He needs to do that. It won't be very many of them, but it needs to be done nonetheless.

His bat was ready last year, I saw him a good 25 times or so last season...it is definitely ready.

Just has to continue to get his feet under him behind the plate.

He'll stay in AAA long enough to avoid hitting Super 2 status even if he is tearing things up.

The Dolans have been big spenders in the past though guys

There is no set date to 'avoid' Super two status since it is based on a percentage of players in a given year of eligibiliy- this is why Shapiro has said in the past it isn't a consideration because it is a moving target relative to the rest of his rookie class. This is a fan creation that teams simply don't hold to- what happens if Santana is held out until July simply b/c of Super Two, then comes up and promptly gets hurt? If a team really is using this as the sole reason not to call a player up, they are moronic.

Clubs have it in their minds, but they can't really plan for it- to say they are is to believe they are actually determining when they call a player up based on what might happen two years from now. At the most, it prevents clubs from bringing a player up to start the season, but after that, a team can't really control if a player ends up as a Super Two guy or not. If the Indians REALLY wanted to avoid Super Two? They would determine halfway through his 3rd season if he is going to qualify (based upon the current players in the majors with between 2-3 years service time) and if he falls within the top 90%, send him to Columbus. That is the only way to definitely do it.

Right. And LaPorta was just in AAA that long because he needed to work on his fielding...

They have a very good approximation of how long it is necessary to keep him in the minors and they also know the shot of this team being competitive this year is incredibly small.

If you plan on seeing Santana any time early in the season, don't hold your breath.

If the Tribe was deadset on not wanting LaPorta to reach Super Two early, they would have never recalled him the first time to come up and sit on the bench. His first recall was proof that yeah, they had no intention of holding him back just for this purpose. The concept of holding a player back in the minors strictly for Super Two just isn't true. It is a reason clubs will use to postpone calling up a player, but certainly not reason no. 1 and in and of itself it isn't why Santana will open in Columbus. His lack of catching experience- which is the main reason why he even spent a whole year at AA- is the main one.

If i recall correctly. Joe Mauer didn't play in AAA and he turned out ok. If Santana has a nice spring training then he should be with the bigs or at least not down in AAA for an extended time.

LeBron James skipped college and he turned out fine too.

It doesn't mean Kevin Durant's year at Texas hindered his development in the NBA.

If there is no reason to bring him up (such as chasing a division title), keep him down there and have him gain experience....it's what's best for him and the team in the longrun.
