So long, David Griffin

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Other names, available now, have been mentioned as part of the Orlando search. I wonder if Orlando is willing to wait long enough to grab Griffin, or whether Griffin would take another job before the end of the playoffs (which seems very unlikely).

If I recall correctly, the NBA draft is only 4 days after a potential Finals Game 7.

Given that Orlando is 5th in the lottery, you would think they'd want someone in place well before they'd have to make a potentially crucial selection like that.

Jokic is already better than this Love, that's for sure.

I think his stats are, sure, but is Jokic a better player than what Love was doing in Minnesota? I'm not sure personally.

I don't think Jokic will ever be the best player on a championship team in this era of pick and roll and 3 point offense though. He can't guard anyone.

Same can be said for Love, but Love's game allowed him to be a tertiary option and his superb rebounding allows him to contribute defensively. I don't think we can say the same for Jokic's game to this point.

I don't know if Jokic is a better than what Love was in that one year in Minnesota. Don't forget that it was only 1 year.
Jokic is a special talent, he can do it all on offense. Shoot 3's, score from the post at an insanely high efficiency, top 3 best passer for his position at the very least and you can build an entire offense around him.

Defensively he has ways to go and is a terrible rim protector, but he still posts a DRPM of 2.2 and has the best DRTG on the team. He has a 9'3 standing reach and is mostly limited by current shape.
I think he can improve on that end and still transform his body. Love is capped out.

He is a very good rebounder so he would still help us a lot in that regard.

I agree. I just think Jokic's rare ability as a point-center is devastating.

It is.. and it would be horribly underutilized with Lebron and Kyrie doing all the Ball Handling and Passing..

JR:

'Griff did a hell of a job putting together a bunch of likeminded people together.'

Shout out to Griff there, re-sign him up.

Every single major rotation player (big three, thompson, jr, deron, shump, korver, and frye) has had at least one impactful game this postseason. Roster is not perfect but not many teams have a top nine of guys capable of contributing in the playoffs. And we all know Jefferson is going to be well rested and ready to go for the Finals. Griffin deserves some props.

Love did it for more than one season though. He had two of those incredible 26 ppg seasons in 11-12 and 13-14. He didn't become a full time starter until his third year (10-11 - the season he burst onto the map with his 30/30 game), and he immediately put up 20 points and 15 rebounds per game.

He lost that one season in the middle of his dominance due to injury that may be clouding your view of just how consistently dominant he was in Minnesota after they shipped out Jefferson and built around Love.

Jokic still has a ways to go to reach Minnesota Love's status. I personally think it's likely that he will statistically just like you do. I don't think Jokic will ever be able to anchor a championship defense.

I'll continue to the derail with the Jokic talk.

It's hard right now to imagine any player, any player, being good enough to be "the best player on a championship team." Not with LeBron, possibly the greatest ever, on one side, and Golden State, the most talent ever assembled on one team, on the other.

But this won't be forever. Golden State won't have that group together forever, and it's unlikely anyone, at least for a long, long time, will manage to put together a team with that much talent. So I think those things cloud our judgement as to who can and can't be the best player on a title team.

One day, I think Jokic can be good enough. I think in normal years, like 3 years ago, Harden is good enough, and he doesn't play much defense either. Like if you take this Houston team and send it back in time...that's a team with a make-up that could have possibly won a title against that old Heat team and the Spurs.

But this is a pretty unique moment in NBA history.

The one downside about having these full weeks off is Griff could potentially do interviews with other teams during the downtime...
