I think that's a good guess on the gun. It's been hinted that the end of the show is going to emphasize atonement, as they were starting to get at in this episode.

(((music playing))) Jax wakes up, puts on rings, goes through dresser drawer, gets journals. Hold kids. Throws away bloody sneakers. Leaves house.
Goes to storage unit. Looks at personal items like birth cert and family photos. Puts them all in a burning barrel.
Goes back to burned out HQ or whatever. Looks through a bunch of deed documents in the office. Sees his dad's bike under a sheet in garage. Leaves.
Goes to Opie's grave...leaves the SO+NS rings on top of grave.
Goes to Tara's grave...leaves his wedding ring on top of grave.

Can't believe it's over. With SoA being a cashcow and all, Sutter still left it open for a special return to Charming later in life.
