Sports Related Career Question

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
If you major in sports management in college, that degree is going to lead you to like running a gym or doing sports marketing. I had that as my dual major, but I dropped it because it is too narrow. I have had internship offers from the Aeros and the Indians, but they do not pay. The Cavs and Browns are a little tougher because there are thousands of people applying for the limited spots..gotta know somebody really.

beat me to it. My boy is taking that right now....

I know that this is really unlikely, but what about being a player agent. Does anyone know what to do for that?

Technically, you do not have to earn a degree to get your license but in the majority of cases, they go and get their law degree. There are colleges that offer sports management with this emphasis, which in turn you would complete the law portion of your education in law school, or graduate school.

It's all about WHO you know. The chances of doing much more than lower level journalism will be tough, but if you are willing to get your ass kicked around for 5-10 years you might have a chance of finding a back door into a really good job. But not without a degree -- and minors are meaningless -- trust me you don't want to go into any job interview talking about your minor and hoping to land the job. Unless you have an MA in English or journalism, you will never pay your bills with writing (of course there are always exceptions, but I've rarely seen any when dealing with journalism). I have my MA in English and I taught writing at AU for two years before finding a good job outsite of the field...I have a lot of friends who are paying their bills as writers, and barely making ends meet -- but they all have advanced degrees (MA).

And more generally, my first two sentances probably apply to all DREAM jobs in general -- and working in sports in any way is certainly a DREAM job. Hard work only gets you so far, if you don't make key relationships within a few years then you will probably never move up into more interesting and/or better paying positions. But don't overestimate college -- there are a lot of really successful people in any field who said *uck college, and instead starting working on making key relationships and finding back door opportunities. WHO you know is always more important.

If you're willing to stick out 1-2 years of college before you can get into the school you need, I suggest going to Ohio University. The EW Scripps School of Journalism there is one of the top in the country, but extremely hard to get into as a freshman. It usually takes 1-2 years of school at OU before they will accept you into the program, unless you've got a lot working for you like scholarships, ACT/SAT scores, or a hell of a nice portfolio to show off.

I spent the last 3 years of high school preparing for a degree in sports broadcasting/journalism. Too bad I didn't stick with it, instead of giving up when the finances looked too much to juggle. Hooray me for going to the military and now wasting any motivation I had to go back to school.

All of those ideas suck..

Become a pro in basketball football or baseball and you'll make way more than any of those other careers.

As long as you keep a 3.0 here, you can get into the scripps school of journalism.

I've been in nacho sales for 5 years at the Q. A few more years I hope to be selling beer. Twenty years from now my goal is to be the usher right by the bench....Lebron will still be dropping 25 a game and know my name.

Nacho sales is where it's at...chicks dig it too.

How is Mark Cuban lucky? He started three differant companies (two with a partner) and sold when the time was ready. He diversified his stocks, the same thing a normal person would do.

They can if they have the right knowledge and abilities. You have to know what you're doing to start a business. Plus you have to have some attributes that not everyone has.

Look at all the millionaires that have went from nowhere to something.

Mark Cuban was VERY lucky. Sure he was in the position he was in because of his work, but it was mostly luck that gave him the billions.
