Re: Tankapalooza 2012-2013 Edition!

We're 5 and 5 over the last 10 and have played the 6th hardest schedule in the league to do date.

With Speights and Ellingtion and an easier schedule coming up, I think the tank is going to run into some some anti-tank territory (mines, TOW's, helicopters). Barring injury and another trade designed to make us weak for the betterment of the long term, I think we're going to have trouble keeping a bottom 5 rank

Seeing as we seem to play better against good teams (not named the Bulls) than against bad teams, I think we'll be all right.

Re: Tankapalooza 2012-2013 Edition!

Pretty sure this feels like a thread last season. Where the Cavs had a little winning streak, people start getting scared for an 8th pick in the draft....

Just eerily familiar.

Re: Tankapalooza 2012-2013 Edition!

With all the reports on how teams are not thrilled with this draft I wouldn't be surprised to see teams more willing to trade out of the top 3 picks. If we manage to swap the heat pick with the lakers pick and with our two secon rounders I think we could have plenty of amo to make a trade like that. Even if that's not enough we do have plenty of other assets to get a deal done.

Yeah, I remember everyone flipping out about picking 10th and taking Myers Leonard.

Cavs are only 2.5 games out of 7th seed. We could end up there pretty fast if we don't trade away some talent in the next 18 days.

Re: Tankapalooza 2012-2013 Edition!

The fact that we have this thread (and that it was started so early in the season) hurts my heart.

I know it's for the greater good, but damn, I want some winning basketball again on a consistent basis...

Sarcasm appreciated.

Re: Tankapalooza 2012-2013 Edition!

For those who aren't worried about the tank......be worried.

Top 10 picks right now:

Minnesota - 18 wins
Detroit - 18 wins
Toronto - 17 wins
Sacramento - 17 wins
Phoenix - 16 wins
New Orleans - 15 wins
Orlando - 14 wins
Cleveland - 14 wins
Charlotte - 11 wins
Washington - 11 wins

If the season ended this week, gaining one more win on these other teams puts us at the 6th pick. Two more wins puts us at the 8th pick. Things get ugly fast.

The fact is we have the best player of any team on this list...by FAR. We now have a bench that is consistently outperforming other teams' benches. We just beat Oklahoma City and had a 3 game winning streak before falling asleep and playing down to a bad Detroit team. The second half of our schedule eases up.

The tank is in grave danger...and if you can't see that, don't be surprised when the lottery comes around and we have the 8th best odds at #1. You can bust this post back out in a few months.

This is much different than the similar scenario last season. We now have a full fledged super star, a young stud in Tristan, a talented rookie SG who has had explosive scoring games from time to time already, and a legitimate bench. Anyone hoping for a top 5 pick to add to the core should be seriously nervous.

(And before Pyro comes in and throws a hissy fit, I'm thoroughly enjoying these wins. I'm just smart enough to realize that they aren't in our best interest in the long term. And I'd like to think that I'll continue to be a Cavs fan in the long term.)

You will relax once Speights "Sprains his pinky" and has to sit 3 weeks.

There's no way we finish with a worse record than Orlando and Charlotte, and I'm willing to bet we finish over Washington as well. Looks like it'll be a 3 team race with us, NO, and Phoenix for that #4 spot unless Grant does something drastic.

I would say we could easily lose our shot of being in a 3 team race with us, NO, and Phoenix for that #4 spot unless Grant does something.
We had a young talented team that still lost despite playing well at times because our pathetic bench put a little turbo in the tank. Now that plan has gone into the toilet because we happened to add a relatively talented big who is is also fighting to get a deal next year. Nothing is more dangerous then an NBA player in a contract year (see one Tim Thomas)

Re: Tankapalooza 2012-2013 Edition!

Hollinger's playoff odds predict the race to the bottom like this today:

Seed - Wins - Team
1 - 20 - Charlotte
2 - 25 - Orlando
3 - 25 - Sacramento
4 - 27 - Washington
5 - 28 - Cleveland
6 - 29 - Phoenix
7 - 31 - New Orleans
8 - 32 - Detroit

So it looks like the Cavs are in the 4 to 6 band right now.

I really do believe that we would've lost all of our last five games had we not done that trade. For example, where else would we have gotten the kind of production we did from Speights (21 and 10 + energy) 30 minutes against the Thunder? Irving could've gone off as hard as he wanted to, and we likely still would've lost if it weren't for Speights putting Irving in a position to win it for us. The guy is averaging a 23.1 PER. That's the last thing we need on a team that needs a high draft pick this season from a guy that won't be here past this season.

We need our short-term guys like Speights to suck, and suck hard so that our core guys can be awesome, blowing shit up on the court in the process, and we still lose (see this year's Cavs-Knicks game where Kyrie scored 41, but we still lost). It's a win-win that way because we'll still have a great core of guys by the time we're ready to make the jump into the playoffs, but we'll have that one last high pick to work with because we just didn't have the supporting role players (easy to find) around them during the season to allow them to win a bunch of games.

All I'm asking for is one more top 5 pick (preferably top 3). After that, I will root for the Cavs to win every last game possible and be genuinely disappointed if they don't win although I will still take consolation in the fact that their draft pick will still be better for every loss. :chuckles: But the big difference will be that I will still prefer the win over the better draft pick whereas, like now, I prefer the better draft pick over the win.

I still think we can snatch a bottom 3 record if we move Speights and some other guys. We're barely winning the games we have been winning, and our bench has been the difference. Take that away, and we'll possibly revert to what we have been doing the entire season: having close games, but still losing.
