Telfair considered a witness in shooting
By Shira Springer, Globe Staff | October 18, 2006

Celtics point guard Sebastian Telfair found himself in the wrong place at the wrong time while dining with his fiancee Monday night at Justin's Restaurant in New York City, according to a league source. While eating dinner, Telfair parked his car in front of the restaurant. At around 10 p.m., a restaurant employee asked Telfair to move his car. Telfair took his car to a nearby parking garage.

According to the league source, on his way back to the restaurant, Telfair had a gold chain ripped from his neck by a group of four men. The four men also harrassed Telfair, making him nervous. Telfair then called a friend for help, asking that he and his fiancee be escorted back to the parking lot. Telfair and his fiancee soon left the area.

A few hours later, the rapper Fabolous was shot in the leg at the same parking garage where Telfair had parked his car. According to the league source, New York police believe one of the four men who harrassed Telfair was the shooter. The police consider Telfair a witness in the matter, and asked him to view a lineup. When asked to confirm whether Telfair looked at a lineup, NYPD spokesman, sergeant Kevin Hayes said, "We're not going to confirm any people we may be talking to during the course of the investigation unless it leads to an arrest."

According to reports out of New York City, Telfair looked at the lineup during the second half of last night's game between the Celtics and Knicks at Madison Square Garden, though coach Doc Rivers told reporters the point guard missed the second half due to a stomach ailment. Judging from the comments made by the players after the game, they were unaware of the circumstances surrounding Telfair's second-half absence.

Given how well known Telfair is in New York City, it appears the Celtics attempted to cover up the news, or at least delay its reporting until they returned to Boston. Telfair was raised in Coney Island, gaining national attention for his play at Lincoln high school.

"Last night, we were in the process of getting more information," said Celtics director of basketball operations Danny Ainge. "We wanted to do that before we addressed it publicly."
Seems like that kid's hangin out with the wrong crowd...

Eating dinner with his fiance is the wrong crowd?

It's obvious that the same men who tried robbing him were the one's that shot the rapper fabolous at the same spot. He was at the wrong place at the wrong time, which could be anywhere in nyc. He's lucky he wasn't the one shot. Shootings help rappers, but not basketball players.

So I wouldn't say because of this incident he is running with the wrong crowd, unless you know more than that article states.

lol, he was with his fiancee, how is that the wrong crowd???

He is a known person and they were obviously looking for those kind of people because it is a upscale part of NYC.

He's probably made himself a target now that people know he had his chain taken and did nothing about it though.

I say "wrong crowd" because:

1. I didn't actually read the article, I just posted it (you caught me  )

2. It wouldn't let me post the article without saying anything, so I hadda type something (perhaps removing the "quote" tags and just posting the article would have taken care of that little problem :chuckles: )

3. It wasn't long ago that he got caught with a gun in his bag..Now he gets his chain stolen in addition to witnessing a shooting. Is it just a coincidence that the kid can't catch a break?

Where was his gun now...dummy.

funny how these guys grow up in a place, claim there hood, and thats what they give back to them, telfair has been surrounded by this stuff his whole life.

The Jailblazers... even when they switch teams there still part of it for life...

It's pissing me off how everyone is acting like Telfair did something wrong here.

Obviously it's a nice neighborhood and instead of gangbangers ripping people off in their own neighborhood where they can be easily identified they picked a higher class area with less chance of recognition and a bigger reward.

So he's a Jailblazer and a moron for dining with his fiancee at a restaraunt? That's ignorant..so because he's a celebrity trying to eat in public he's a thug or a bad person.

Hell I doubt this would have happened to any other athletes because they would have either refused to move their car because they're [said athlete] or had some pee on do it.

there is a reason trouble follows certain people....

The same thing could have happened to the manager of the restaraunt...the guys probably noticed the chains on Fab and Telfair and approached them..

I wouldn't wear bling like that if I'm flying solo though..no way.

the way some of these guys carry themselves, and act like they are untouchable because they are from the "hood" it doesnt matter where you are from or who you know, there will always be someone who doesnt care.

That's the thing..you don't know how you carry yourself. You assume he carries himself the way some african american nba players do...and with Stephen Jackson trying to Clint Eastwood a strip club in Indy it doesn't help break the stereotype.

You seriously think he should of pulled a gun?

I get what you're saying about now he's a target, but think about this from a risk/reward standpoint. He's worth how many million and that chain was worth how much? Losing that chain was like one of us dropping a quarter. He'll never miss it. Now, if he pulls a gun, worst case scenario he gets shot and maimed or killed. In this scenario, you give up your chain. It's just not worth it.
