Many Buckeye fans are still in “woe is me” mode after the Fiesta Bowl, but let’s face it; they have little to complain about. There is no question that Ohio State has one of the top three programs the last 5 years, at worst tied with Texas for second place behind USC. Let’s take a look at their accomplishments.

First, to be considered one of the best programs in the last five years, you need to have won the title. Here’s the list of title winners the last five years and their total number of tiles: USC 1.5, OSU 1, Texas 1, Florida 1, and LSU 0.5.

Here’s a breakdown of most major accomplishments. Those in red indicate first place for that category. Those in green indicate second place:

USC is clearly #1, being in first place (or tied for first) in every category. OSU is clearly #2, being in either first or second place in every category. At best, you might argue that Texas has been about as good as Ohio State the last five years, but you certainly couldn’t argue that that they’ve been better. Think about that. Over the last several years, OSU is better than all other schools but one.

Something else to consider when looking at this: USC plays in the PAC Ten. Of all the conferences represented above, by far the PAC Ten is the weakest. Honestly, USC has no competition. In that conference it’s USC, and then all the rest. They have a free pass to a conference title and thus the BCS every year. If they played in the Big Ten, SEC, or Big 12, I would be willing to bet they’d average about 1 more loss per year. Not only would that decrease their wins, but there is no way they would be 5 for 5 on Conference titles and Top 5 Finishes, and their other categories would likely suffer as well.

Look at the dominance Miami showed when they played in the Big East, and how quickly things turned when they went to a decent conference (the ACC). You can be certain that if Miami had stayed in the Big East they’d be one of the top teams I’d be talking about right now, and would likely be near the top. Playing in the hapless Pac Ten is a HUGE advantage for USC.

So let’s recap. OSU is the second best team this year, only to Florida. This is Florida’s only top 5 finish the last 5 years, and in fact they’ve been unranked twice in that span! The one time OSU wasn’t in the top 5, they still finished the year ranked (they finished 20th in 2004). Clearly it is better to be OSU than Florida. In addition, OSU is the second best team overall the last 5 years, to only USC. This is a USC team that’s playing with a stacked deck, since they are the only consistent team in their conference.

I know that many are still grieving the ugly loss to Florida, but Ohio State fans should be celebrating their good fortune. Tressel had one bad game, and lost to the National Champions. Guess what? I wouldn’t trade him for anyone. It is STILL good to be a Buckeye.

The question came up, what about the teams that haven't won national titles since 2002? I took a look, and the only other schools that have finished in the top 5 more than once since 2002 were Miami (twice) and Oklahoma (three times, plus 1 Heisman). My point still stands, that Ohio State has the second most successful football program the last five years.

The Trojan Horse versus the Tressel Train…Pete Carroll is deified as the holy grail of coaches in Division I for college football. Granted, his halo got a little tarnished after backing into a win against Washington by three points and then losing to 41 point underdog, Stanford. But we take the long view here at Bucknuts. So…from that long view, just how much better is St. Pete versus a perceived mortal like, oh, Jim Tressel?

Well, since 2001, here is a look at their won-loss records:
Pete: 70-13
Jim: 69-14

And to put that into starker relief, Ohio State’s last three losses were all to teams that eventually won a BCS game, two of which were national champions (that’s Penn State, Texas and Florida, if you are keeping score at home) while Southern Cal’s last 3 losses were all to unranked teams (Oregon State, UCLA and Stanford). And in his last eight conference games, PC is 5-3 while Tress is riding a 17 game Big Ten winning streak.

I was talking with one of my buddies about how OSU (as well as Cleveland) are hated/disrespected in the national media, and he sent me the response below, which reminded me of this thread:
It is an interesting phenomenon that USC and Carroll are the Media darlings, yet Tressel has actually accomplished the same things and can surpass Carroll with its second BCS championship – 3rd try in 6 years. Yet, the national media hates us. The fact that ESPN crucified us over M. Clarett and doesn’t spend a minute on Reggie Bush is certainly noteworthy. Is it Tressel’s lack of pizzazz that turns off the media – I wonder.

Amazing:

2001 7 – 5 first year challenges – still beat UM

2002 14 – 0 Champions, Big Ten Champs

2003 11-2 lost to UM thereby keeping us from the BSC title game.

2004 8 – 4 Tressel’s second true rebuilding year if you count 2001 still beats UM

2005 10 – 2 Co-champs of Big Ten lost to eventual champ Texas and #3 PSU by combined 10 points

2006 12 – 1 Big Ten Champs – lost to eventual #1 Florida

2007 11 – 1 Big Ten Champs – can win national title – 3rd BCS title game – yes, more than USC.

Totals: 4 Big Ten Titles, 3 National Title game appearances, 6 – 1 v. UM, 73 wins – 83%, 24 Football Academic All-Big Ten 2007 (more than any other member school), Team GPA is over 3.0 for the first time in memory, More NFL draft picks in the last 7 years than any school, also most #1 picks than any school during the same time period.

After all of that we still “backed in” to the big game and played a lousy schedule. Whereas I need to listen to ESPN exalt the mighty USC as playing the “best” football right now” – yet still manage to lose to 41 point dog Stanford at home.

I want nothing more than OSU to beat LSU so that we can get some of the respect we deserve and the national media can remove their lips from the SEC's ass.

If OSU beats LSU, all the national writers will say how they may not be the 'true' champions because of all the parity at the top of the standings. It will somehow be a 'tainted' championship.

1. Clarett and Bush are not the same. Yes, ESPN does have some weird hatred for all Cleveland and Ohio State teams (some do like the Indians) but that's not even close. Mo pissed his life away, plain and simple.

Guess what though? Those 5 years will only go down in history together if we win this years National Championship.

if we beat LSU, there won't be any second guessing who is number one after that. Too many people are saying that we are going to get killed now, so if we win, I don't see much controversy (esp. if Illinois wins too). Besides, there is always so much blahblahblah about the rankings after the bowl games, even if OSU is not involved in the top two. There will always be complainers - see politics, sports, management, etc.

I've reached the point where I could care less what the national media thinks. JT can keep doing what he's doing, which is being as consistently successful as anyone, and I'll be happy.

More interesting tid bits:

* OSU has won 30 of it's last 32 games, which is better than any other school.
* OSU has been to more BCS bowl games than any other school (ever, not just the last 5 years).
* OSU is tied for first (with FSU and Oklahoma) for the most national title game appearances (again, not just the last 5 years).

here is the total range of possibilities:

1> We win big

2> We win close

3> We lose close

4> We lose big

Let’s discuss.

The presumption is that we can sway people over to our way of thinking. Well, that’s wrong from the git-go. Just like bigotry and arrogance, you can’t use evidence to persuade everyone to shed deep-seated beliefs. So, if we “win big”? Then it’s “LSU almost lost five games, man. What if those Luckeyes had to play Florida again? Huh?” And if we “win close?” Then it’s “a call or two here or if that Les Miles wasn’t such an idiot…”

And, of course, if we either “lose close’ or “lose big”, that just re-affirms the onslaught of factless-based opinions.

The moral of the story is who cares what the national media thinks? If they want to hate, no matter what happens, they will hate. I'll take the trophy, and they can take their hate.

LSU isn't as good as the '06 Florida squad, perhaps not even the '07 Florida squad.

The Bucks have a much better D than last year and Tressel is going to prove to Michigan fans that they're better off without Les Miles.

Bucks win a close one.

I know this cat. Once he discovers EAYOR, it will never be the same.
