The ISIS offensive in Iraq

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Apparently they reneged on the Jordan prisoner swap deal (if there was a deal) and just released a video of burning the pilot hostage alive in a cage. What the actual fuck is wrong with these people.

They just want us to leave them be! :badair:

Yeah, no one actually ever said that about ISIS... You're getting your Arabs confused.

We still shouldn't be putting troops on the ground over there. Let the Arab nations do something about it if they care.

They're all the same thing to some people.

Those people are generally not going to have a civilized discussion on the matter.

ISIS absolutely doesn't want to be left alone. They want to keep provoking the West in order for them to keep spending billions upon billions of dollars that only end up making them hate us more and recruit more Muslims in the process.

Their biggest recruiting tool has been the US jumping at every provocation.

Stop being so passive-aggressive.. Again, we come to people trying to paint others as "racist" "stupid" "obtuse".. Just shut up or cite something instead of getting on your high horse. This shit is annoying.

ISIS doesn't want to be left alone, quite obviously. They want concessions from wherever they may come. People on this site stated to leave the area alone. That isn't smart for the US in really any fashion. Personally, I'd rather have the US engage in eradicating the extremism because they're strong enough to, than just sit back and hope that when the dust settles, nobody comes trying to kick our door(s) in.

Exactly. They want us to keep sending them money and weapons and keep killing innocents to help fill their ranks. The leaders of all of these groups get very wealthy off of our meddling. If we cut off all money from the region and got the fuck out, the governments over there would stomp them out in short order.

Boy, I couldn't disagree with this statement more. Can you explain how you think that would happen?

Actually disagree with that.

Too late for that, now.

The terrorist fighters are better trained, better funded and fighting with more of a purpose.

Pull out of there now, and ISIS takes over to create a terrorist state that would be a huge threat to American security.

The Arab nations are incapable of any meaningful action without support. Their militaries are a joke (except Jordan's, they are well trained professionals).

Exactly how I said it would happen. No more American money? Where are they going to get funding? You realize the U.S. essentially created the Islamic State to overthrow Assad, right? And the idiots dedicating their lives to this have plenty of motivation. If we stop killing over there in lands we don't belong, you stop their recruiting pipeline.

Now Israel is also supporting the Islamic State because they are Sunni and Assad is Shi'a, and Israel is more concerned with how powerful Iran has become as a result of America's brilliant adventures in Iraq. But, again, if they want to destabilize the region that is on them. There is no reason we should be involved.

A threat to do what? This government has called just about every state in the Middle East a terrorist state. None of them have come here yet. If they tried to get here they would be annihilated before they got to the ocean.

Well, my question to you is how are the Governments going to stomp them (don't worry, I mean ISIS and not all arab people (WTF?)) out?

I agree with what @King Stannis said about the ability to stomp them out.. In that reality, do we just hope the movement fades? It's my opinion that the US (and allies) use their advantage (money and capability) to extinguish the prevailing ISIS threat wherever it may be. It's also my opinion that this was all happening before the US cared all that much about Assad.

If the West goes home, Iran would be able to send support to Assad and put an end to the mess in Syria. In Iraq, who the fuck knows what would happen. Iran may intervene there too. Israel would try to support ISIS, but without the West covering their asses they might not want to get too overtly involved. Of course, just reading that last sentence, that will never in a million years happen.

The movement is the same as all of the other movements over there. If the West gets out of it they go back to Sunni vs. Shi'a and there is nothing the United States can do short of using nuclear weapons to eliminate all life in the region that will stop that.

It's also my opinion that this was all happening before the US cared all that much about Assad.

Well, everyone is entitled to an opinion, even if there isn't a shred of evidence to support it.

Libertarianism is an interesting perspective.

This isn't 1939. Threats are not merely confined to symmetric threats or national militaries. Isolationism is as useful as the Queen Mary these days.
