The unofficial Farewell Mike Holmgrend thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
The real question is how will Clevelanders butcher the new regimes name? Holmgrum was a classic...

Could we see a Joe Bender?

It isn't just a Cleveland thing..

Signed,

Barack Osama

Call Pat for playoff tickets? Maybe if he's answering phones at the box office. Hiring a puppet to lead your football team and putting the Cleveland Browns 2nd to Eric Manginis feelings are why this didnt work up to this point.

Holmgren did a solid job. I felt like he really cleaned out the roster and positioned the team for success in the future.

I agree with that to an extent. But, my problem is that he(or I) could have have accomplished that before the start of the 2010 season started as a short term consultant from 12/09 - 8/10. Then again, the league might not have accepted that...they wanted Randy to have a "football guy" running the team. We basically paid him 13.33M per season for 2-1/2 seasons. After cleaning house I think Heckert could have done everything that was done without any assistance from Holmgrand. It just seems like he's been in retirement mode for 1-1/2 years. Oh well...

Agreed. All Holmgren did was bring in Heckert. If Heckert was here without Holmgren I think the results would have been similar. Except we might not have Weeden or Colt since those were Holmglum picks.

Only one thing is certain to me after reading this thread: I can write circles around Tony Grossi. Pathetic.

If anyone is surprised that Grossi would write a sour-grapes article about the end of the Lerner/Holmgren partnership, you haven't been paying attention:

http://www.waitingfornextyear.com/2012/01/report-tony-grossi-out-as-browns-beat-reporter/

That seemed to be a battle in which nobody won. Grossi was lacking in analytical reasons why the Browns were struggling, instead doing some lazy finger-pointing. The reason the article comes off as a deeply personal attack is the same reason he wasn't a very good beat writer. His comments about the Holmgren and Lerner dynamic certainly have some validity, but Grossi is definitely letting his bias shine in the article.

Oh, give me a break.. Grossi's column today on Holmgren's tenure as pseudo-owner was refreshingly candid compared to the vast majority of fluff that the Cleveland media usually serves up to us. All Terry Pluto does these days is talk to team executives off the record and then posts their musings in a regular Sunday special he calls, ironically, "Terry's Talkin'." Call it "sour grapes" or "biased" but what in today's feature from Grossi was misleading or flat out false? If Mike Holmgren did such an admirable job as Team President, then why do you think Jimmy Haslam recently re-signed as CEO of Pilot Flying J when he stated that he wouldn't do such during his introductory press conference? Haslam saw the job, or lack there of, that Holmgren was doing in his role, and likely realized that he needed to roll up his sleeves A.S.A.P. and actually commit to being the head of an organization, which The Big Show ostensibly never fully did. Mike Holmgren was paid a VERY handsome salary to be a "serious, credible leader" and perform the duties that an involved, driven owner does on a day-to-day basis. Typical money spent from Randy Lerner that didn't earn him what he coveted. Good riddance to both of them, and congrats to Tony Grossi for doing HIS job unlike The Walrus.

Mike Holmgren:

He hired Tom Heckert.

True, and he should be praised for hiring a formidable general manager like Tom Heckert. However, he also brought us, arguably, the most incompetent head coach in the entire NFL.

So true.

Nobody is saying the Grossi is lying, but if you can't sense the bias or sour grapes in that article then you should re-read it.

What do you think the national perception is of Holmgren as President of the Cleveland Browns is? You don't have to possess any sort of ill-will or animosity towards Mike Holmgren to believe he failed as Team President for the Browns. Here's an excerpt from an article by Yahoo's Jason Cole regarding the many critics of Mike Holmgren's perfromance as de-facto owner:

But it also made people wonder about Holmgren's commitment to doing the job.

"People around the building are wondering how much he really wants to be here," the source said. "Really, the best thing would be for him to step away and say, 'Sorry, this is not something I really want to do.' "

All I'm saying is that Keys was right. Grossi didn't do any analysis. None. All he did was blame Humgum for being lazy. I'm sure it's the truth. But really, as team President what were his duties? Once he hired the GM and head coach I didn't expect him to be overly involved. He was basically the de-facto owner. He made the decisions about who should be running things, he wasn't running them himself. Frankly I'm happy with that since he was a bad front office guy in Seattle. Letting Heckert run his drafts was the right move. I'm not going to defend the Shurmur hire, that was nepotism of the worst kind.

The only real facts he put out there were Jim Brown being ousted along with Merletti. That's about it. The rest read like an article written by a jilted ex-girlfriend.

I'm just glad Holmgren had to tote his tusk-less walrus carcass up before the media one last time.

The nepotism and sloth of his tenure makes me sick. I find it difficult to give him much credit for hiring Heckert. He didn't go through a thoughtful analysis, weighing the pluses and minuses of several candidates. I think he would have hired whatever GM was happened to be represented by Bob LeMonte. He just got lucky Heckert was good.

Interview a total of three people for head coach, sure. Don't lift a finger to help your overmatched choice, fine. Enjoy the third year of your ongoing retirement. Get the fuck outta here.
