The "What are you playing now?" Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I'm so torn on the warlock. I love everything about it, but get absolutely wrecked in PvP due to low HP.

This beta is absolutely fantastic. I seriously cannot wait for the full game. Already slapped down the $100 for the Limited Edition.

Bungie hasn't let me down before, and so far, they haven't here either.

Maybe this will keep you from touching yourself so much.

Your mother should be happy.

Halo 2 SP campaign was among the best in the series.

Halo 3 > Halo 2 > Halo 4 > Halo 1

Agreed, Halo 2 was my favorite campaign. Don't agree with how you ranked the games though, but we've had multiple Halo conversations on here before, so no need to state my opinion and derail the thread. :chuckles:

Halo 2's single-player campaign was five hours long and had a cliffhanger ending. It was fucking terrible.

Every competent game has a cliffhanger ending. Did you really think they weren't going to make a Halo 3 or something?

I used to argue with friends who actually thought halo was done at 2. Oh man the rage when they couldnt accept that it prints money and therefore will never end...we were in middle school though so its cool.

Wasnt able to play destiny this weekend, but ill for sure play today and add you guys when i get home

This is total bullshit. Very few games have legitimate cliffhanger endings. They have real endings but also leave things open for sequels. They easily could have had a satisfying ending to Halo 2 that still didn't wrap up the whole storyline. Instead, the game literally ended right before the climax, with absolutely no sense of resolution whatsoever. The idea that a story has to end on a cliffhanger to have a sequel is ridiculous. The first Halo didn't end on a cliffhanger. It had a satisfying ending that still left things open for a sequel.

Games with single-player campaigns should be compared to books or movies, or even more modern serialized television shows. Even if the book or movie in question is a series, each installment should be reasonably self-contained, with a beginning, middle, and end of its own. This is why the first three Ice & Fire books feel so much better and less disjointed than the fourth and fifth books, which ditched that format almost entirely. It's also why The Lord of the Rings movies were so good, but The Hobbit movies have been so disappointing. In LotR, you knew there were going to be three movies, but the first and second movie still had great, satisfying endings. Meanwhile, The Hobbit doesn't do this, and as a result the movies just leave you wanting.

Everyone knew Halo 2 was getting a sequel. That doesn't dismiss the fact that Halo 2's story does not in any way stand on its own two feet, and that's why it sucks.

In fact, if "every competent game has a cliffhanger ending," I challenge you to name me ten other games that have endings without any semblance of resolution, as Halo 2 did.

How can you "leave things open for sequels" without having a cliffhanger ending?

Pretty easily... not really a gaming example but 21 jump street, the first hunger games movie/book, the last of us, the ratchet and clank series, CoD Black Ops... just listing stuff i know first hand off the top of my head

How can you "leave things open for sequels" without having a cliffhanger ending?

Simple...by resolving the main plot line of that specific game but not wrapping up everything.

Mass Effect 2 is a great example of this. The game is primarily about the Collector's abducting humans and the quest to find out why. That is resolved by the end of the game. The story has a beginning, a middle, a climax, and an end. However, the overall story of the Reapers coming is not resolved. It isn't a cliffhanger, but there is still clearly story left for another game.

The Metal Gear Solid games have all done this as well. They each resolve their primary storyline while still leaving threads open for sequels, and usually include a post-credits scene that introduces a plot twist that will be important later.

You can probably think of basically any other game in a series and see this exact format. Gears of War. Mass Effect. Metal Gear Solid. Saints Row. The Walking Dead and The Wolf Among Us are particularly good examples because they use this format both in individual episodes (each of which has a climax and resolution while still leading into the next episode) and seasons, which wrap up the main plot line of the season but still have room for more stories to be told. You finish each episode satisfied because the story has moved forward and there is some resolution, but you're still ready to play the next one because not everything has been resolved.

Halo 2 fails as a story because it doesn't do this. It doesn't wrap anything up. It doesn't have a climax. The game literally ends right in the middle of the primary plot, right before the climax would come in a well-written story.

To be honest, I'm having trouble coming up with another game that does end like Halo 2, with no climax and zero resolution, but if you can list ten feel free.
