While I loved Red Dead, it did have its issues.
As far as the controls and usability, I will say that I also had trouble with it in the same way that I had trouble with Grand Theft Auto 5.
To me, it felt like they took the GTA 5 engine and reskinned it to the Wild Wild West and made some changes to suit horse play vs car theft and driving.
I think the main issue is that Rockstar seems to love aiming for realistic physics even when it doesn't necessarily make the game more fun. GTA IV really suffered from that imo, which is why it was far and away the worst GTA game since GTA3. They pulled back a bit on the realism for V, which especially helped with the driving. Driving was such a fucking chore in IV because of the physics engine.
I don't mind the realism as much in Red Dead 2, because it does look great. Arthur's slow ass walk is really annoying, though, especially when you're indoors or in camp where you can't run.
