how the hell does that work? One addendum to 1995 Tribe: The Indians had the best record in baseball, yet were the road team in all 3 playoff series
I voted for The Shot. I've never felt the wind sucked right out of my soul before that moment. That Cavs team was good enough to go on and win it all. We were beating the hated Jordan, who was going through that stigma of never having won a championship before. He just had that little extra lift over Ehlo, then made an incredible shot. Absolutely heartbreaking.
Not to mention, we've had to re-live the moment every time the stinking NBA playoffs promo videos want to show classic moments. And next year will be the 25th anniversary.
Remember this wasn't quite the unbeatable Bulls teams that they were still 2 yrs from becoming. This was a Bulls team who the Cavs swept the season series handily. This was the Cavs team who Magic had declared was to become "the team of the 90's". I think this adds to the shock and pain to this game
how the hell does that work?
Before the 1998 season, home-field advantage in the division series and the ALCS was predetermined on a rotating basis among the division champions. Two teams would get the extra home game with the third division champion and the wild card coming out on the short end. The Indians, despite winning 100 games during the regular season, were the division champ left out in the cold for the division series and the ALCS.
They didn't have home-field advantage in the World Series against Atlanta because it was the National League's turn on the old rotating basis. Home field advantage for the World Series is now determined by the All-Star Game winner.
Since 1998, home field advantage in the division series is given to the two division winners with the best regular-season records.
The Yankees played Seattle in the first round of the postseason because two teams from the same division cannot play each other in the first round of the postseason.
It's got to be 2007 ALCS. That was just un fucking believable. I still can't wrap my head around it. I wasn't alive for the Browns ones, I was 18 during the 2007 ALCS so finally old enough to really grasp that shit (I was like 7 in 1997) and was becoming a big sports fan.
Horrible. Still have nightmares.
I was at Game 4 of that series, which put the Tribe up 3-1. It was so electric leaving that night and everyone thought it was finally going to be the breakthrough because we had our Cy Young winner going in Game 5, at home no less. Then, a 20 game winner going in Game 6.
I knew after we lost Game 5 though that the series was over and we had no chance at winning either game in Boston. Just fucking brutal.
There are so many choices in this group one can go with but after thinking about it, how can anyone not say it was game 7 of the World Series. We had the lead, our closer on the mound and were 2 outs away from the 1st World Championship for Cleveland in 33 years.
I felt very uneasy with Jose Mesa coming in for the 9th inning but he had been so clutch in years past, I thought he could rally to get 3 little outs. I never saw Counsel cross home plate live. I silently stood up while the ball was hit to the outfield, walked outside of my dorm and screamed obscenities as loud as I possibly could. I was joined shortly thereafter by many other tortured soles around campus doing the exact same thing.
This is a tough tough tough choice and for me, it's hard to be clearly defined top choice with so much heart ache in our town.
The move to me is number one. Who knows what would have happenedwith management with that team, but we lose our football team to another city, have zero football for three years and get stiffed with a just bullshit excuse for an expansion franchise and the reincarnation is just an awful excuse for a team. Meanwhile, Baltimore has a team stacked full of Hall of Famers and two super bowl titles.
Then there is Jose Mesa choking away our only chance at a modern era sports championship in game seven. That was extremely hard to watch as a kid.
The Browns losing two golden opportunities to get to the Super Bowl only one silly mistake and a awful coaching decision, which will be our last chance at football success for the long term future.
One of the top five greatest basketball players of all time that is born in your backyard making your basketball team the laughing stock of the sports world as he humiliates them on live TV as he walks out the door and on his way to now two NBA titles isn't exactly easy to watch either.
The extra sad part of this for me is that I am a huge Notre Dame fan too....double whammy.
