Video games are no stranger to controversy. Since the early days of gaming, there’s been much debate over what content should and shouldn’t be permitted – and who should and shouldn't be allowed to see it. It’s a pretty safe bet to say that the battle will continue to rage on as new titles are released.

'Doom'

Though “Doom” may seem tame by today’s standards, it caused quite a stir when it was released in 1993 because of its gory violence and use of satanic images. The controversy intensified when it was discovered that the teenage shooters in the Columbine High School massacre were avid players of the game.

'Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas'

Rockstar’s “Grand Theft Auto” franchise has had its share of controversy over the years, first due to its violent themes, and more recently, about drinking and driving in “GTA IV.”

But the series’ most famous controversy involves a hidden sex scene in “Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.” The scene unleashed a firestorm of criticism from parents and politicians – and cost Take-Two, the game's publisher, a bundle to make right.

'Manhunt 2'

“Manhunt 2” caused shockwaves with its violence, which was so graphic that Rockstar ended up having to add filters to blur the action in certain scenes. If that weren’t enough, the Wii version, with its motion-sensitive controls, had players swing the controller in a stabbing motion in order to slash and kill victims in the game.

'Night Trap'

“Night Trap” was an early attempt to blur the line between movies and games, and featured live-action video of a girls’ slumber party. The game probably would have been a forgotten novelty if it weren’t for two things: it starred Dana Plato, of “Diff’rent Strokes” fame, and it was at the center of a U.S. Congressional hearing due to its mature content.

'Bully'

The commotion around Rockstar’s “Bully” started before the game was even released. Parents, teachers and anti-bullying groups criticized it for trivializing teen tormenting. Later, another controversy developed when it was revealed that Jimmy, the game’s 15 year-old protagonist, could kiss boys as well as girls in the game.

Thats the worst list ive ever seen. The only one i see that could be on the list is manhunt.

I'll never forget that first Doom game. It was literally amazing at the time and I had never seen anything like it. My sisters husband showed it to me on his computer and I think I was 11 or 12. Pretty nostalgic just seeing that one screenshot of it. Otherwise this list can eat my crum.
