I've been using torrents for years and pretty much getting them all from Demonoid. I feel like though I've been reading a lot more articles lately on how torrents aren't as safe as once thought. Has anyone here used usenet? I know I'm probably not the only one here who constantly downloads shit, so what does everyone else use?

What do you mean they aren't as safe as they used to be? As long as you don't seed much, it's pretty hard to get caught. Unless you're talking about getting spyware or a virus from them.

Going from Bittorrent to Usenet is like going from using the internet vs going to the library.

Usenet takes more work and it's not easy to find your files. You have to be alot more geeky and there is a learning curve if you don't know about winrar and the newsbin software is something to get used to. Usenet's files come in partial files and sometimes they aren't all there and there are time limits on the files that are posted.

But, I'm sure after you use it for a long time it'll come like second nature. people swear by it, but I'm too lazy. I've tried to get myself to do it that way, but the torrents come and smack me on the face it's that easy.

With Bittorrent, it's easy to get a cease and desist letter for downloading the newest movie, and you run the risk of getting sued for downloading music files (although many bittorrent lawsuits have been thrown out).

I've personally have gotten many cease and desist letters for downloading movies on public trackers. Nothing has come of them. And note that I always use PeerBlock which is like being forced to fuck an AIDS victim with or without a rubber with holes in it. Yes, you would reach for the rubber with holes in it, but it's not likely to work.

I wouldn't use bittorent to download music, although I have, but I use it at open wifi. I use frostwire to download single music files (i'm a leecher and don't share though). Sharing is for canadians.

I have downloaded a shit-ton of TV shows and have never ever gotten one cease and desist letter. I've probably downloaded 100 terabytes of tv shows at LEAST.

I wouldn't say that bittorrent has gotten more risky. I just got into demonoid myself, I only use them for stuff I can't find and they have files that aren't available elsewhere.

Articles are scare tactics. Become a member at Slyck.com and read up and I'm sure they can answer any more of your questions.

I download torrents almost every day. I got one letter. I called them up and told them that I do alot of online game so I am using alot of bandwidth. They said "oh ok" and pretty much that was it and I have never heard anything more from them.

I wouldn't say torrents are getting more riskier. Don't seed. (But please do, because I probably need to download whatever it is your not seeding)

Demoniod is pretty nice. I actually just go to www.torrentz.com and do a master search. I end up using Pirate Bay 90% of the time.

I mainly download TV shows. Whenever I download a movie, I make sure it IS NOT in the theater. For one, the quality is usually shitty. Secondly, most cases of people getting caught is because they are downloading shit still in the theater. If you need to see it that bad go pay the $10 and watch it.

What are these letters you guys are talking about? From your internet provider or from some copyright enforcement agency?

So basically they can tell that you're downloading a bunch of stuff because your bandwidth is high, they just can't tell what you're downloading?

Torrents are not the safest (and definitely not the best) way to download but as long as you don't download the newest movies/music there you probably won't get caught plus you should upload as few as possible because normally those law firms are trying to catch the uploaders. the question is what do you want to download? if you are downloading movies, games, music (albums) one click hosters like rapidshare, hotfile, fileserve.....are the the best way to go. it costs you 5-10$ a month but you can download fullspeed and there's almost a guarantee you won't get any letters (as long as you don't upload anything on their servers). you can also use those filehosters as a free user but the download speed won't be nearly as good. another advantage is that there probably isn't a movie, album, game you can't find a link for on one of those filehosters (and it's pretty easy to find those links especially if you know some good sites). if you miss a tv show for example normally there will be links to download that episode a day after it was shown...

but like i said the question is what do you want to download? if you are only interested in downloading single music files i wouldn't recommend one click hosters unless you have no problem with downloading the complete albums and not only the one song you are searching

So now that Demonoid is down, what are the best torrent sites?

I was always a fan of the site torrentz.eu as a search site.

However, F torrents. Get into the scene man...get yourself access to a topsite and you're set. But that's easier said than done.

Buy stuff legally you leachers. Except KCOTT, you're cool.

Couldn't disagree more man. Binsearch + SABnzbd + small monthly fee to newshosting.com = me downloading with safety and ease at much higher speeds than you can ever get with torrenting. Honestly SABnzbd takes all of the headache out of downloads. I read one of Gouri's nerd rants on here, heeded advice, and will never go back.

I have accounts at almost all of the top private torrent trackers. I've also got an Astraweb usenet account that I paid for for the first month on a credit card that was about to expire, and have been getting it free forever now since they seem not to check this stuff out :D

I paid a one time fee for premium access to NZBmatrix and use SABnzbd, couldn't be happier. Even if Astraweb figures it out and cuts me off I'd happily pay the $11 a month for unlimited downloading if it meant I didn't have to torrent ever again. I hate torrenting even with the good private trackers, I couldn't imagine using a public torrent tracker to download things. That's probably like being on of those Japanese girls who gets video taped being randomly jizzed on while she's sitting on a park bench.

Usenet maxes out your connection 100% of the time, does not require seeding, has everything before it hits the torrent sites, and with a decent service provider has several (5-ish) years of retention. If there is ever a time I can't find it on usenet (0.0000000001% of the time) I use torrents. But its so ungodly slow and annoying.

How do you find what you are looking for on rapidshare/etc?
