Any way we could trade for Marion near the deadline? Or is he a building block there now?

We could definitely acquire him...

But there would be some things that need to be included in the deal:

- The Cavs would NEED to trade expirings close to or equal that of Marion's or else the Heat would have no reason to deal him to us

- The Cavs would need to take on some bad contracts... Either one or both of Mark Blount's and Marcus Banks' deals...

- The Cavs would need to give up some talent to interest Miami in doing this deal

If the Heat are doing bad, I could see us putting together a viable package..

But if not, then I think they'd rather keep him...

I really don't see Marion as a fit here but here's a deal that could work:

West (S&T), Varejao and Wally for Marion and Blount

Yeah, We would have to trade west as well

But Blount is a decent player, a good backup for Z at least,

At least stick him at the 2 guard or something like that

Cavaliers aren't interested in Marion. There was a little talk last summer, but that had to do with dumping Larry. The Cavs aren't looking to add someone like Marion... unless it is a cheap player.

Heath i swear im not picking on you, this is the second post this morning Im following you up, why wouldn't we be interested in a Forward that has career avg of 18pts 10 rebs a game? He can play good defense, great jumper long wing span. He is in the last year of his contract, and would be a pretty easy sign after the season if he doesnt re-sign it is still 17million in an expiring contract.

This kind of signing at the deadline is exactly what we need, lets hope Miami is playing badly again this year to even have this as an option.

Yes, that's what we need. A 30+ yr old SF that would be abused playing the PF in the East...

Brilliant idea!

Conjecture is what is. If we made a move like that I would leave him at the 3 and move Lebron to the 4 when they are on the court at the same time. Lebron can handle most of the top 15 PF in the game as it is from a defensive stand point. The problem he could create for them is when they are on defense.

...sarcasm on... But I appreciate your out-side the box thinking I realise it is easier to look at things at face value and you hit that nail right on the head....sarcam off

That's exactly the type deal we would be looking to make at the deadline ...I'm sure it's a scenario we have on our radar, and is one of many of the possiblities that couldl exist around the deadline.

Alot of competitiion will exist around the leagues contenders as well, but, we could have the pieces needed.

Having Lebron makes us a flexible team, and both Marion and Lebron are special breeds that can assume numnerous team roles..

Might not be too easy due to the fact that Fegan is his agent.

Seriously, how do you know? Because reputable sources like W&G and Max (or crummy sources like Chad Ford and Hoopsworld) haven't made mention of it?

I think it's plausible that he'll be available at the deadline, but it depends on how the Heat view/use Beasley. If they view Beasley as a PF, Haslem might be more likely to be dealt. If they view him as a SF, Marion might be the guy they're looking to move. IMO, they will go into the season with a SF-PF rotation of Beasley-Marion-Haslem and see how things turn out. Also, it will give the Heat more time to negotiate a new contract with Fegan. If the Heat find that they're not in the playoff chase and are far apart in #'s with Marion/Fegan, they could look to trade him in a hired gun deal more often seen in baseball (cough, C.C. Sabathia, cough) where the team acquiring him wouldn't be so much interested in retaining him as they would be looking to add the final piece to their championship run.

Are you associating our need for a PF/C with the idea of picking up Marion? I think he would be great at SF, with LeBron and Mo at the guards and Ben/AV and Z at the PF/C positions. I would only want Marion playing PF to supplement any minutes we might need there due to injuries, although Smooth brought up a guy (Blount) that Miami would probably want to include as part of a deal, who could give us a few minutes at PF/C.

I agree that an impact player like Marion is surely the type that we should be eyeballing around the trade deadline.

However, wouldn't these two factors make the Cavs shy away from Marion specifically?:

1. Marion would expire at the end of the year. I would imagine we'd have to give up all of our expirings as well to get him. However, just having Shawn come off the books wouldn't be enough to get us under the cap, and it's only once in a long while that we have the kind of trading firepower with expirings, etc., at this deadline. Wouldn't we instead look to use those magic bullets to land someone that we could keep for awhile and grow with, rather than just a rental? Seems too much like a "Brewers get C.C." thing to me.

2. Isn't Marion represented by Dan Fegan? I could understand bringing Marion here if it was understood that we could sign him to a fresh deal after the season. However, after Andy's debacle, Fegan's the last dude I would trust to negotiate with us.

So, in my mind, I feel like we should eye up more permanent options, someone we can add to our core and really use for years to come, no?

I certainly think that Marion's talent is the kind that we should set our sights on... I don't disagree with that. I just feel like his contract situation directly conflicts with the bump in talent it would give us.

W&G, in my short time here, I've learned quickly that you would surely have a better grasp at the Cavs thinking on this matter than I ever would. Am I on point at all here?

The Fegan factor is an issue ...but, neither team nor agent can let personal issues kill any and all possible interactions. You just can't let personal issues like we've had with Fegan go longterm. You've got to have short memories and realize that you have to eventually turn the page and ultimately do what is right for those you represent...

That definitely makes sense.

But what about the fact that his deal is up after this season without giving us the assets or the cap room to replace him with another impact player after the season ends? That being the case would the Cavs still look to add an expiring Star like that knowing that they would likely lose him just a few months later?

Personally, I'd love to see us pursue someone of Marion's caliber, only with a slightly longer contract that would still give us the option to keep them for awhile, or at least extend them if they fit in well.

Even if we trade expiring for expiring a lot like is done in baseball, I would be ok with it. Im down with renting Marion for a title run, simular to what the Brewers are doing with CC. Push come to shove we do have some assests aswell.

do you think there is a chance that we can acquire him before the season starts. for example something like wally & west (s&t) or sasha & west (s&t) & snow for him? they have 2 pf in beasley and haslem

Personally I doubt it, they need to be out of the play-off picture for them to start looking to the next year. But thats just what I think.
